That's why we keep losing the best people, the real backbone of teams. So don't kid yourself that performance will save you. When your number's up, no amount of effort is going to change that.

Managers who know nothing about the work trying to choose among developers who know nothing about the work rarely optimizes for anything. This doesn't even account for the endless political fiefdoms at Cisco. In the words of Cisco's own management if you have to keep doing layoffs it represents a failure of management.
And if you survive, there is no career development, just a paycheck from a while longer
Management doesn't even want engineers doing engineering anymore. We were told directly and firmly: AI must write the code from this point forward. The devs on my team just do paper shuffling work like amending JIRA tickets.
I don't think anybody thinks differently but yeah.

Smart engineers are not the most show offs, never taking away credit, just the opposite. When their time comes, so be it.
