Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

I miss the days when layoffs surprised us

I know that probably sounds strange, but when layoffs actually surprised people, it meant they happened rarely enough that nobody was constantly expecting them. These days, layoffs feel so normal that there’s barely even shock anymore. We’re always waiting for the next round, so when it finally happens, it just feels like more of the same.

The first layoff I witnessed was in October 2001. It was definitely a surprise. Popped up on MAXXES news. DJ Newswires let all of us know 2% of the workforce was being laid off. This was before we had email access at our desks.

so true.

we normalized it.

the american worker has been going down the drain since 1980s.

look around you and talk to people, almost everyone is pi---d and anxious. kids are looking at million dollar home prices all while wages for everyone who's not top 5% are not moving. there is no career path that will provide any kind of solid path forward no matter how smart you are or how hard you work. folks at the top do not drive cadillacs any more, that got replaced with Ferraris - 4 bedroom exec houses got replaced with sprawling estates. look how many billionaires we have and what they do to us as a nation.

resentment towards what's going is growing exponentially, common folks on both right and left see the same thing and agree. so, something needs to happen - i am just unsure how radical the change will be. i fear that we may be facing a very dark scenario.

this is not sustainable.
