Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

RTO policy is stupid

Why would a company that makes money from supplying computers to home workers mandate a policy that returns all worker to return to the office a minimum of 3 days a week?

You would think that, as a computer company, HP would encourage remote working to be an example for other companies to take note on how they can have remote employees too. HP would then continue to have a sales bo-m (like they did in 2020) on laptops to supply workers.

Bottom line, HP wants to justify having large useless buildings by filling them up again with employees.

When I was told to RTO I cancelled and declined all meetings outside work hours. If you have to go back, make it give you more “you” time.”

I told people the new policy said I can only work from the office. 100% of the time.

Why? Probably the same reason so many doctors and nurses are overweight and eat junk food.

You really don't understand how business works. The argument is flawed because it assumes HP should base its workplace policy on increasing laptop sales, even though internal decisions are driven by productivity and operational needs, not indirect effects on demand. It also treats the pandemic sales surge as something HP could recreate through policy, ignores how little its own workforce affects global demand, and oversimplifies the tradeoffs of remote work. If you are representative of how the employee base is, I get why they are doing layoffs and stock is a dog.

With the price of gas now sky rocketing, I wonder how long it will be before companies will allow remote work again or risk losing their best workers.

Because we don’t get high on our own supply. A lesson adopted from DEI initiatives.

"Hey that market strategy for making good remote experiences during COVID? Don't be crazy. That was never our strategy. You think we would deliberately downgrade our products for a new market strategy of 'Future of Work'? Get with the times man." -- HP Marketing, probably

It is an excuse to build a case against those employees who can't regularly go to the office, and then lay them off without severance.
