Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

How long before 99% of branches are closed?

A few will remain as relics of the past, but within five to ten years, the overwhelming majority of Wells Fargo branches will be closed. There is simply no point to them anymore. The people who are using them are short for this world. Nobody younger even bothers anymore.

Yes, I work in a branch. It’s ridiculous on how they expect low level employees to work. My manager had the nerve to question me on booking appointments. I’m like WTF? We need a Union

Too long, branches are a thing of the past. I switched banks and have zero need to ever visit one since I can do everything remotely and get reimbursed for using non-bank ATMs.

Rip this band-aid off already.

There’s an initiative underway to modernize the branches. I don’t know if it’s all of them, but many will be getting a makeover soon.

They should do "cafe" style branches/retail locations in higher foot traffic areas like malls, etc. like Capital One and other companies are doing. Many companies have innovated and taken a chunk of WF's piece of the pie since WF is archaic in most of these areas.

Get over this branch closer nonsense. They hardly generate revenue.

It'll be much longer than 5-10 years. Wells actually has a program in place to update all premier locations. Unfortunately they are behind the curve compared to competition in updates

I agree with OP with exceptions. Bank branches in small towns and even small cities can be points of gathering for residents if managed correctly. Cookie cutter we are just a bank branch is history. Where I have seen this the bank treats a branch like Walmart treats their stores. One had an A frame style branch with a huge fireplace and offered free coffee and hot coca. One had a DMV office and the mayor's office in it. Large cities, I agree, no need for branches. In more rural areas if you become the daily destination for people, you will dominate the financial landscape too.

The branch closest to where I live - maybe 3 miles - is a dump. It’s in a strip mall that’s half vacant and its hours are anyone’s guess. Walk up ATM outside the branch door and it usually lacks cash.

In a 3 mile radius from my house I have 3 Chase and 2 BoA branches, not counting branches in supermarkets. Two of the Chase branches are less than 5 years old. All of them are bright, clean, well staffed branches in the parking lots of busy shopping centers with both walk up and drive up ATMs.

WF is not looking to compete at the branch level. I moved my accounts to Chase and have never been treated better. Those are the real reasons you don’t see people in WF branches.
