Another attempt to manage safety by games, gimmicks, circus like events and slogans...

Safety Always is just a lip service
They won't invest in automation to eradicate the safety exposures to operators unless it is financially attractive payback.

We have a case here too.. company refuse to invest in automated tape slitter. Instead they ask operators to wear cut resistant gloves to manually slit the tapes. And when accident happens they blame it on the operators.

Reason for not automating - financial payback didn't meet the two years requirement.

Funny how a company trains people on "ergonomics" and proper lifting but then refuses to spend 10 thousand dollars to buy a machine that will move 50 lb bags automatically. Instead, plebes are told to carry bags across the warehouse, resulting in back strains and hernias. Then, head honchos blame the employees for working unsafely.

dont be fooled by the slogan "SAFETY ALWAYS". if there needs to be any investment to improve safety, the financial payback must be good before they would invest. try asking for equipment automation to reduce the manual risks and see what your leaders say.

Me to plant safety director “union rule that safety guarding and light curtains need to be working properly in order to run production line; we can’t start production for two weeks.”

Safety director to me “rules are made to be broken. Start production now or you’re fired”

Similar real world example. At all plant meetings, we get lectured about slips, trips, and falls, and keeping "eyes on path." The problem is the "path" has been packed with equipment. Every square inch of floor space is full. Then, when someone trips, it's their fault? Maybe an expansion should have happened 12 years ago????? Just sayin....

Real world example here and one of my favorites showing the hypocrisy of management. A hastily arranged "safety" meeting was held after a few incidents. The meeting was really more about "get your heads out of your arses, people!!!" because people who had been forced at CG to work mandatory OT made a few mental mistakes. Meanwhile, people had to use a side entrance because the main way was blocked off with baracade tape from a condensate pipeline leak that had been going on for weeks in the winter and making an ice rink. Gripe about behaviors and then don't spend the 1000 or so dollars needed to fix a leak.

Do as we say, not as we do indeed.
