Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Something feels off..

I've be at NM for a decade, working in tech. Idk if it's just me, but I feel like the recent reorg emails and town halls have been more fluff-filled than I've ever experienced at NM. I've been genuinely shocked at how many words are said and written without actually conveying anything of meaning, or adding any clarity. I don't remember it being this bad. Is this a testament to the age of ChatGPT where we're now seeing our leaders convey purely AI-generated fluff? Or is this just a testament to new SLT members not being as personable as previous years? I know I'm not the only one feeling a bit unsettled by recent SLT communication, but I don't know how widespread that feeling is.

BR constantly bragging about her cozy relationship with TG explains why this dumpster fire will never be extinguished. He’d have to admit “his only candidate” was a total mistake,

Some of them look downright miserable and sad when they don't think the camera is on them or people are looking at them.

Yea it's strange, I normally expect buzzword filled word salad out of management at large companies but this is over the top. So many words but they say nothing. They seem quite out of touch with the real world, I would have expected VPs at a large company would seem a little more cognitive

“SLT shuffling things around to pat their friends on the back with fancier job titles”…. Whaaaaa? That never happens at NM. /sarc

@et this is my though as well. BR has a gloomy vibe. They've even had a few Freudian slips regarding downsizing in prior town halls.

There is a distancing happening. What this really points to is that it is much easier to downsize those you do not have a human connection with.

Brace yourselves for cuts of middle-management types before bonuses get paid out. They are likely going to cut too deep and damage the ability of the tech side of the house to not only support current systems but to keep pace with the industry. AI is nowhere near the magic bullet they think it is.

@ap not sure, I don't think anyone in my space was laid off so I wouldn't know. Looked more like SLT shuffling things around to pat their friends on the back with fancier job titles

Those emails definitely went through AI versioning — some of the emails kept the tell-tale signs 😉
