Thread regarding Nielsen layoffs

Over a year later, I'm being asked to apply for my old job

I was laid off at the end of last year and have since landed a new job, so I’m in a good place. Still, getting contacted and encouraged to reapply at Nielsen completely threw me off. The role sounds very close to what I used to do, which makes it even more confusing. After being let go, this kind of outreach feels tone-deaf. I’m not going back, but I’d love to understand what’s actually going on behind the scenes when this happens.

Not interested a bit since its now a we vs. them. India took over tech and the bosses thwre dont want get criticized in how they do things. They know the platform and have their minions in office 5 days a week soon. Or maybe 6 days?

@qk i definitely believe that but i'm just saying if everyone is getting laid off because there is cheaper labour in other countries then how do managers have the power to hire people back who reside in the U.S. etc. it defeats the purpose of the initial layoff

@qj Some roles that have been heading that direction (people that already work in offices) but not all. But even in a GCC you could have a layoff where a manager would want to try to bring someone back if they could. There seems to be a vibe here where people think that managers are happy to let people go or see them as disposable, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Maybe they just got married, just had a kid or finally bought that house. Those people matter to us very much, they are our friends, we do care what they think, they have families and they have bills to bills to pay. Delivering that message is extremely difficult and there absolutely is guilt involved with telling someone they no longer have a job while keeping your own job.

@qh why would they be hiring again in the same place though if everyone is getting laid off due to GCCs

Often times when layoffs occur, Managers are required to let go good people that are good at what they do and that they enjoy working with. Some Managers will commit to themselves to reach back out to those employees when they have an opportunity to hire again if the employee is interested. Someone got let go that didn't deserve it and their old manager checks in to see if they would like to come back. That is really it and the manager would expect that they only come back if they really want to. Nielsen has brought back a lot of good people over the years that quit or were laid off previously. There isn't an evil plot or conspiracy going on there.

I wouldn't bother the effort of the reapply. They're using you for something. either they realize you could do something your replacement couldn't, or more likely, they have a good candidate in interview, but they aren't quite sure, need to have you back to compare against. in either case, i'd go straight to delete. They'll send a gift basket to your home if they really want you, a jelly of the month subscription even :)

What role or area?

old software people have been contacted about problems;not sure about jobs. Systems are not working and GCC is lost.
