That is an summation. That foundational difference explains why SAS is still for sale and likely will remain so until JG passes.

IBM tried to buy SAS several times, back in the day. But they never offered a good price. They finally bought SPSS instead.

This is a good price, and an all-cash deal. IBM apparently considers Confluent a strategic fit. They may have offered 10X to discourage other bidders.

Confluent, like Databricks, is built on an Open Source foundation. They add their value on top.
