Is it true that if you're let go (laid off, not fired) you can never be rehired?

@110 HR checks that box when they are told. For instance Bessant had a policy of not rehiring anyone who left the bank during the start and end of the financial crisis, no matter the reason why they left even if it wasn’t their choice.

Fake news. As @110+1kb3mzv2g accurately states, it totally depends how you choose to o out.

If you are lucky enough to get a package, take it! ( I am so jelly of you!!!)

And if you h@te your manager, your job, this company, etc, play along nice to leave gracefully so HR does not check that "Do Not Rehire" box.

But @bp+1kb3mzv2g truly nailed it. Why on Earth would you ever want to return??

I am still looking for the elusive exit door.

it is circumstantial. HR system has a “do not rehire” box, depending on departure aspects may or msy not be checked.

No, that’s not true. However, if you receive severance pay and choose to take the lump sum, then get rehired within a certain amount of time, I believe it depends on how many weeks of severance you received, you would have to pay it back.

They’ve also been giving people 30 days to find a new internal role, and you would keep the same seniority. The bank gives you so many chances before placing you on a do not hire list.

That rumor is not true. If you are laid off you are not placed on a no rehire list. It takes quite a bit to get to get to that stage.

The real question should be: If you're let go, would you ever WANT to be rehired?
Thirteen years ago, I was working for an anonymous employer. They had nothing but good things to say about me and the work our team was doing.
Out of the blue, they laid off 60% of the corporate workforce.
No reason other than "strategic restructuring."
Six weeks later, they called and asked if I was interested in returning to my previous role. I jumped at the chance because it was a company I genuinely liked working for and the pay was great. There were actually a few of us that got the callback and were excited to get back to work.
Two months after that, they re-fired us without warning or explanation.
Gone are the days when you could show up, do a good job, and expect your employer to fight for to keep you on the team.
These days it's a day-to-day gamble and all you can do is hope that your badge still works when you show up to the office.
