GM is about to learn some harsh lessons after cutting engineering staff so deeply.
Some of us can finally relate to what happened with the software/IT cuts.
It's just irresponsible.
I can see the panic in the management.

@110 Generative AI indeed represents a paradigm shift in the world of software development. But GM tends to implement new things without fully understanding the nuances. There's a lot of throwing it against the wall to see if it sticks, or in the best case scenario just seeing how it can be used to justify cost cutting. Good luck to GM trying to operate without software developers.

TBH, this is all predictable and as AI replaces coders, GM won't need managers over bots.
What I find most surprising is that people are investing trillions into the AI bubble.

You're right, union members have more protection from arbitrary management decisions and are required to be treated fairly.
Salaried workers have big egos and think they're better than everyone else and management will see that and treat them well. They think unions are just to protect lazy losers, when it's really just about fair treatment. Bad employees in a union can still be fired.
What's wild is you see more disgruntled employees on the salary side. Most are quiet quitting, some are actively sabotaging. Most managers hide in their office and want nothing to do with the daily business. The hourly folks who actually make the company money get sh-t on daily but still come in with a smile. I guess salary should finally unionize.
