Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Optum becoming a toxic brand

I have landed a new job after being laid off at Optum (so there is hope and rest assured there is life after Optum). As I meet new colleagues and mention my background the recurring theme is “I have a few buddies over there and all of them are desperately trying to jump ship” or similar. On the other side, I have had job seeking friends and even a recruiter I used in past reach out and say “I am looking at a posting there but I hear it’s just terrible” etc. it seems anecdotally that word has hit the street and if when this offshoring fails and they try to refill in US it might not even be possible to get anyone good.

You’re not wrong! Best thing you can do for those who remain is tell everyone on glassfloor and here. I joined in 2009, I had two offers and the recruiter told me UHG had one of the highest churn rates and wanted me to take the other offer. I should have listened because in 14yrs I only got more than 2% merit once. With all the cronyism going on in MN and the butt kissing yes man attitude of weak insecure managers it only took a few years to realize working hard was not going to get me anywhere than just working would! Then the mass offshoring began and I became frustrated and hated my job. The only reason I put up with it was because I was getting ready to retire. It worked out perfectly because I quietly quit two years earlier and only worked half weeks presumably training the other half, those sh---y raises were made up for! If I was younger I would have quit after 7yrs so yeah the grass is greener elsewhere, so spend time job hunting. Btw only here posting because all the RIFs are not helping my ESP investment, SH better figure out how this place became such a shithole!

It is not new that UHG/Optum is toxic… It has been that way for a long time. I worked there off and on for 10+ years. Been gone for a while after a layoff and I am so much better off. It is truly sad when an organization has an entire department to handle layoffs! Would never recommend anyone to work for this company!

Agreed, worked there on salary 15+ years in IT, worked many nights, weekends, 12-14 hour days, sometimes 80 hours a week plus with usually no bonus, terrible raises, only to be told I need to do more and getting compared to my peers. Got laid off 1 year ago and the contrast is night and day. I work my 40 hours a week and at new job with much better pay and no stress. I thank god every day I got laid off, if you found yourself recently laid off, there IS much better out there, stay vigilant

The place has had the reputation as the most stressful and unorganized part of UHG since its inception. In MN at least its reputation as “chew em up and sp-t em out” has been well known since before COVID. I have not met anyone who looks to work here unless they are laid off or fear a layoff. That is why average tenure is like 11-13 months.

Money talks, well stock maybe.

Some of the svp ESRO people who were fired are still looking for roles… good luck to those who are looking!
