Thread regarding BD (Becton Dickinson & Co.) layoffs

This is really taking a toll on my mental health

I spent the weekend looking over our finances, trying to figure out what we’d do if I’m affected. I’m the sole breadwinner in my family, and that’s never sounded as scary as it does now. My wife used to work as a teacher, and she could probably find a job if I hit the wall, especially with all the teacher shortages, but her pay wouldn’t be enough to support us and our two kids. I hate this feeling of not knowing what’s coming or how long we can hold on like this.

@bp BD pays pretty well for most positions that don't do the really hard labor intensive work. if youre a wage slave then you're living well above your means. Wage Slave is for people that are actually struggling and don't have enough. Upper middle class calling themselves wage slaves is hilarious

With how things with BD have been going for years, your wife should have been working so that y'all had extra savings for when you're inevitably laid off.

@ms TGS is currently conducting two projects to assess the impact of tariffs on specific sales, which in itself indicates that tariffs are indeed a contributing factor. However, I believe the primary cause lies in poor leadership characterized by low IQ and dishonesty.

@d6 I worked in a team that directly dealt with Tariffs and yes. It does play a role. We have taken a lot of price increases from a lot of suppliers and could do absolutely nothing to mitigate anything. With already losing share on the market it's not like we can charge our customers. Our margins have taken a hit and the only way the leaders know how to reduce costs are by reducing headcount

@OP does tariff has a role to play here? Can someone without political bias please explain?

I think it's unfortunate, but it's a normal reaction. I'm not sure if they know how low the morale is across this whole company, but it's very grim. You spend 40 hours a week at work... it has to mean more than wage slav3ry.

I am one of the lucky ones - ready to retire and prepared. My heart goes out to those folks who still need their job. I raised my hand to be affected to try and be sure someone younger would not suffer. Good luck.

My advice to everyone is don't wait till the last moment to determine your finances. Do it now, and keep it updated every month. After a while you see exactly where your money is going, and what can be done to tighten the belt so to speak. Are you spending more than you earn? Ive been tracking for years, I know exactly how much is flowing out, and where so when I retire, I can say...I need this amount of income to live the same lifestyle. A few hours at the end of the month. I also use my credit cards as cash...never a balance, and use the to pay for EVERYTHING. Cash back, miles, however you like the rewards. It gives me a state of financial health every month, year after year. Am I a finance guy? Nope I am an engineer. Spreadsheets are part of my life as well.

Many months went by since the curtain call. Savings run out. Being creative paying bills. Not the typical lnkdn spiritual positivist. A proud lone person fitting your circumstances, after the fact. Who knows what they were restructuring to, but they got to decide, I got to accept their decision. It is difficult situation for many. Do your job, they will do their. Do not panic, not now not then. You are in a better spot right now, and I pray your situation does not change.

There is a reason many women return to work after having children. This is one of the many reasons.

If not, you need to live significantly under your means so you can survive a year or more without a paycheck.

You both need to be looking for jobs. I wouldn’t discount her salary. I assume she’d have health insurance, 401k and you’d be able to pay many bills from her salary if you got laid off.
