I'm stuck

Some days I scroll through job postings and it hits me that I’m too old and too tied down to make a move. It’s a strange kind of limbo, wanting out but knowing the odds aren’t in my favor. I should’ve left when I was younger with more options, but hindsight always comes too late.

@a4 I can relate, but I see this as early retirement opportunity with part time work doing something unrelated to your 25 year career. Working until mid to late 60s should only be for those you are passionate about what they do. Going through the motions and being unhappy will cause misery and health issues.

Feeling stuck and unable to make a big move, is a normal reaction to daily stress exposure.
You will get thru this, don’t doubt yourself!

@a3 Who are you referring to, top leader or someone in mid management?
I echo the sentiment that many of us have liked our jobs and felt like we were making a contribution for the better. Then some new folks came in the Technology department and it all went south. Some were let go and some left, after being bullied and ignored in favor of other unknown names. Tens of years of cumulative experience and knowledge just flu out the door.
It's puzzling that such a large and old company hasn't figured out how to audit and see if directors decisions are in the company's best interest.

There is hope. I was in the same boat and decided to exit before I was ushered out. Multi-decade career with nothing but exceptional ratings across the board at every employer. Then, B-A-M, low-rating (writing on the wall). I had multiple offers with several very exciting opportunities within weeks. I ended up taking a job that has allowed me to enjoy working again. There are collaborative workplaces out there and people and companies who value the knowledge and expertise your years bring. Don't let a negative environment convince you that you are no longer valuable. There are good companies out there. You will have to put in the work to find them and maybe talk to a lot of recruiters and deal with some inevitable wild goose chases, but there is a great big light at the end of the BNY tunnel. HEAD FOR THE LIGHT!

I’m in the same boat. Years ago I had some opportunities but I actually liked BNY (Mellon), liked my job, my work life balance and the security of the severance. After 15 years it’s definitely a consideration. But now at 25 years in, zero possibility of severance, I’m in a bind. Job market isn’t great for older folks, never has been, and I’m not in a position to take a pay cut (although no paycheck would be worse).. I know people who have been unemployed for over a year and are told they are overqualified or, here’s a new one, “not enough recent work experience” because they have been unemployed. Can’t win.

Nahhhhhh.
You aren’t stuck. You are a gifted and talented person with maturity who is simply locked in a porto potty right now. Your problem is the same as mine and many others: We F- d up. We trusted and believed in this place. We thought by doing a great job for years and years we would be secure and safe.
We were wrong.
We didn’t count on a noxious sociopath who views people as bills and expenses to alter our lives. Yep, we rolled the dice and came up blanks with this crew. We stayed and now wont get paid.
You will survive. Just keep going. Keep kicking the door until its open. And never let this place define you. It’s all a lie here.

As much as we poke fun on this site, it's posts like this that make our realities more clear. I can emphasize. Use these spring health benefits to talk with a coach who suits your needs. Thoroughly review your finances. You could be in position at your "old age" to say sc--w the corporate grind and do something lighter. Or you could do the grind part time somewhere else less toxic and pick up another lighter part time.
