Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

22 years at Exxon and now PIP

Found out my co worker is on the PIP. He has been with Exxon for 22 years and had cancer last year. He was working even during the treatment even days he had Radiotherapy. I work with him often and his performance did not change. Can't stand this place!!!!!!!!!

Happened to someone I know as well. He was so upset he said he was retiring on the spot when they told him.

@fx fx+1k6bk48nv so under your theory, you get cancer, can't be 100% so you deserve to be treated like cr-p!! You are worthless. You do know all humans have control over getting cancer and other diseases, so you are correct! You win! Feeling your victory yet?

I know two different people in the same situation.

Sad situation, but let's be real.
If your friend was performing at the same level prior to the treatment as he/she was during the treatment, then they were not performing very highly. If you can't acknowledge that your performance takes a hit when you are seriously ill, then you are either a constant poor-performer or you are dilusional.

Before you change the subject and say how cruel this is - that is an entirely different topic - and I agree that we should stick by employees who are genuinely ill.

But don't be pretending that performance hasn't suffered.

@df They will absolutely, positively, all show up and vote for the very people who are actively trying to ruin their lives.

All they care about is culture-war BS. The fact that the very institutions that enable the conduct of organized human life are being systematically destroyed seems to escape these people.

31 years here and PIP in 2020. Took the PIP, passed the PIP, took the package and retired in 2021.

Best decision I ever made.

I had same thing happen, was out almost 6 months with back surgery, have over 25 yrs and soon as I hit 55 , went from outstanding to NI in 2 yrs..... was working the same project for last 4 yrs doing same things. Place su-ks, use to be a company I woulda done anything for, now just take older people make them feel bad at end of their careers by telling them they ain't worth a sh-t. After all the time , dedication and sacrifices, they throw you away like a piece of trash, can't stand this place either.

This sounds like an American problem that I'm too first world to understand. But sure, keep voting for those guys who keep sc--wing workers rights thumbs up
I see exxon going the way of GE/boeing in 5 years. By then the btc was have completely wrecked the place.

@b7 The higher up you go in any large institution, the more sociopaths you’re likely to encounter. This is especially true in large private corporations such as Exxon. In fact, the cruelty itself is often the point.

The only real mechanism for avoiding this is to start your own business, and that comes with lots of risks.

@as I take it that you represent management. I can almost smell the rot through the screen on my device.

To your thesis, cases of disability fraud are vanishingly rare, and do not justify putting someone who is fighting cancer on a PIP. I would expect somebody who has cancer to perform at less than 100%. I definitely wouldn’t rank them NI/NSI.

The real issue seems to be that the company didn’t want to pay the costs of this person using their health benefits, so they found a way to kick them off the payroll, which is something a good attorney can help them with. And you’re on here defending this. Disgusting.

@OP In constrast to your friend's dedication and work ethics, there are numerous employees on short term disability and many on long term disability. Allegedly, some on LTD for the past several years are playing the system. These rotten apples are responsible for the company rolling back many such benefits. Shame on the cheats.

@OP

1) I’m sorry about your friend, and this is low even by the current standards set by modern corporate dirtbag leadership.

2) The most important lesson for everyone reading this comment is to never sacrifice anything for any employer. Ever. Do the bare minimum, collect your check, and move on when the moving is good.

I believe it. I have over 30 years. Was dianosed with an aggressive tumor. Elected for surgery. Was out 6 weeks in the Feb / March timeframe. I probably came back too soon. I was still hurting erc. Then was told i dropped from Very Good to Need Improvement. Reason was i was in a competitive rank group.
