Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Distrust

Its clear to see with how easy people are jumping to conclusions just how broken this company is. Constantly having to wonder will you be next. Dreading announcements, dreading town halls - its a slow, exhausting and emotional mental game. This company has lost the ability all together to value employees, make them feel appreciated for their contributions. There is no trust. Understand a corporation doesnt owe anyone loyalty but a hint of transparency would be nice. Instead of a message that promotes a long, fulfilling career that will provide you growth opportunity and purpose. As if the fact that the constant eroding of personnel doesnt impact us left both professionally and personally. We shoulder more work while inherting more risk our time will soon be up.

I'd say "hopefully HR is taking note"; except HR doesnt give a s#it about Canadian workers or Imperial Oil.

Sad what this company has become.

The IOL of the past does not exist anymore. We all made sacrifices and went above and beyond time and time again believing that at the very least by doing that we would be “safe” and the company would in turn support your career… how wrong we were is still a shock. I will be forced out soon, there is no way I will put my family through a move with massive disruption to all just to see what other nasty surprise awaits from this awful people at Exxon down the road. I do know those who are left today after so many rounds of layoffs at the best professionals you will ever meet and hope they use their knowledge and expertise to get other Canadian companies an edge against new IOL. Such low value placed by EXXON on knowledge of the industry in the Canadian context will certainly be a regret sooner than they think.

@b0
People are the centre but only those at the top.
You are confusing people with the worker bees who aren't that relevant, just means to the end which is maximize profits.
The people are the centre is just motivational kool-aid to boost morale and focus and build loyalty "AS LONG AS IT IS NECESSARY". Once people are eliminated, they don't count anymore. And when required, IOL will hire more and feed them the same morale boosting stories and kool-aid.

I completely agree with the original statement, except that they do owe the employees something. They have spent years declaring people are at the centre, our most important asset, and promising a long and fulfilling career. It is this promise that makes people go above and beyond, make sacrifices for the company (personally, professionally, physically). This is a complete erosion of that agreement, and not for the benefit of Imperial or Imperial employees. I doubt there has even been math done, it’s just a mindless ego stroke from Houston for board and MC (made up of small, powerless, fragile ago and individuals with questionable values) to do their bidding.

@OP In case no one has figured it out yet, HR is a useless department at Imperial. They have never cared or looked after the company’s “human resource”, only the money they’re going to get. You can’t even ask any of them a simple question - they will tell you to contact the HelpDesk and open a ticket. All worthless pricks!!

Please don’t take it personally - the company treats everyone the same regardless of where they are based or what their home payroll location is ie the same level of disdain.

Let’s be clear: ExxonMobil no longer cares about its employees.

Are we going to find out this week coming up what is going on? How are they going to do it by sending out a mass email as I have noticed we have been getting tons of emails about how great the company is when we all know it isnt the same company that we started with even 15 years ago when I started.

@ah we’ll see how the different levels of government react. And agree, the Imperial leadership and board are figureheads serving the interests of the majority shareholder, which could be at conflict with the interests of minority shareholders, for which IOL was once upon a time challenged by a minority shareholder and the poor governance was all over globe and mail.

Decisions are no longer being made in Canada. EM Mgmt Committee is calling the shots from Houston and barking marching orders. IOL MC is doing what they are told. IOL MC and Board should be ashamed of what has been allowed to happen to a previously great institution.

This is not the company I signed up for. Even if I survive tomorrow, I'm looking elsewhere. I'm no longer proud to work at Imperial. The pressure to get blood from a stone and lack of recognition. Shareholder dividends matter above all else. Even if it means destroying the lives of hundreds who have trusted the bullsh-t that's been espoused to us over the years. Actions speak louder than words. Hear that bell ringing? This is our cue to exit.
