Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

How has NIKE avoided the Oregon WARN list?

We've been through a lot this year.
Lots of pockets and smaller waves.

It's paid off, they've managed to keep it under wraps this year.

Known Layoffs in 2025:

  • 300 SEC (May 15)
  • 480 Global Tech (June 10)
  • 150 WHQ - IDSA, NAO, Ops, Marketing, DSM (Sept 2)

Not to mention the dozens of one-offs throughout the year.

Nike conducted several small layoffs in staggered batches.
Which must have all remained under the reporting threshold for each wave.

They strategically timed reductions to avoid hitting the “mass layoff” definition.

These are conservative and confirmed numbers impacted.

What other teams, domains or dates are missing from above?

Do you like how Nike pays severance to people that got laid off, and keeps them on payroll for months after they leave? Do you think they do that out of the goodness of their hearts alone? This is a direct result of WARN legislation. I for one would much rather take 3 months pay and get laid off immediately then a vague warning that I could be laid off in the next couple of months and no pay. Also, the idea of the law was more to provide workers warning when things like an entire industrial/manufacturing plant was going to be closing than it was for people with cushy office jobs.

I think companies can also pay a fee/fine to NOT use warn. Wouldn't put it past Nike if that were true and they did.

Why are people obsessed with the WARN list? You know there’s been layoffs. The media has reported on those layoffs. You gonna feel better when they’re on the WARN list?

@ag he or she has it! Only when it’s a massive number over a very short period of time they must due a warn. Enough time has passed between employees laid off.

I think the answer has something to do with the "staying on the payroll" process along with severance... Someone spelled it out here before but I can't find it.

Basically WARN is either being "gamed" or what have you but regardless it's not useful as an "early warning system" for employees.

The May and June layoffs should have triggered WARN (more than 500 people in a 30 day period). Not sure how Nike avoids the rule. I wish Nike just played by the rules and laws like other companies. It's not special.
