Is this idea realistic? Not sure if a current manager would deny if I try applying for another role within TIAA if our team is short staffed.

@fh THIS. Internal transfer are highly dependent on your divisions policy about staffing and it varies across TIAA. It's no longer a given that a transfer will be allowed. Lots of politics involved now.
I’ve heard of managers denying their employees if their team is short staffed or if they’re the only one responsible for the application.
Happens all the time. Just apply and see where it goes.
You only have to tell your boss you’re applying to a role if you’ve been in that role/team/manager (not counting promotions or reorgs) under 12 months or 18 for NCC folks.
It is courtesy to say you are interviewing for an internal role but not required. Basically a good idea if you get far enough and if the hiring manager likes you and reaches out to your current manager.
My advice is just do it. apply see what happens. Being short staffed is no reason to stay when you can improve your skills within the company and perhaps get more money and find more fulfilling work.
Life is too short to worry about others and managements mismanagement of understaffing. Plus it will only get worse and more short staffed or fewer roles you may want to do come March and July next year when Denver folks walk out the door for the last time.
- This happens all the time...apply for the position and see if you get it first. 2. Once you obtain a new position, the hiring manager, HR, and your current manager will agree on a release date to the new position.. usually no longer than 30 days....3. As long as you are in "good standing" in your current position, per HR requirements, your current manager cannot stop you...all just needs to agree on a release date.
@OP What is your division's policy on these types of transfer requests. Check was the policy is and let us know what is says. Do you have an advocate for you in the area you'd like to transfer to ? If not, chances might be slim to none and none has just left town
