Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Layoffs and PTO

Simple curiosity: obviously Nike (or any other company) can’t pick a specific day where no one is out, so what happens/happened to those who are/were on PTO when the whole thing went down?

True story, I knew a Director day after his wife gave birth he was laid off. Can’t imagine the stress of new baby and then no job.

Friend got laid off and just delivered her first child. Nike will reach you by phone and doesn’t care

I was called while on PTO and given the all clear by my manager. They started with "there have been some layoffs" then hastily said "but not you realizing" upon realizing they hadn't led with the right subject.

I'll always remember that call and my heart perhaps too since it stopped for a second.

OF course I was outside in the yard doing something. Gawd not in surgery or anything at least like the other stories. OOF that's brutal.

Anyway yeah...

The previous posts are all correct. One of my coworkers at Nike was laid off over the phone while in the airport on the start of a PTO trip, so PTO won't save you at the Swoosh.

On the other hand, several years ago at a different company, I was on vacation to celebrate my 15th anniversary with my wife, and my name apparently came up on the layoff list. Like it should be (and isn't done at Nike), my manager was the person who was supposed to deliver the news. However, when he found out, he told HR the situation, and they postponed my layoff until the next round, which was 7 months later. I've always been appreciative of that move because it showed that my manager actually cared and the company had a heart. My severance package was great there, and I've never had a single bad feeling about that former company. I'm still friends with my former boss, and he's provided multiple recommendations for me over the years. When the layoff is no fault of the employee, but due to company performance or reorg, that's how it should be handled in my opinion.

They called one co-worker in the hospital after surgery to let them know. They let another co-worker know while they were traveling on PTO.

It doesn't matter. Whatever to get the dirty work done.

They find you. This is why the “all clear” message gets delayed.

You are just reached out by phone to tell you to join a call. It happened to sometime on paternity leave last year.
