Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

we should unionize

Why not? NBA players, airline captains, even some doctors have unions. Why not us?

The prime issue for me would be things like these layoffs or work from home rights

@wf I could see a software engineering Union not following those rules strictly. It could mean that we asked for no new hires if headcount's truly what the problem is

I don't feel like we're beholden to any other Union practice. Let's just say that we need to work together if we're going to stop getting je-ked around about layoffs or work from home

Even unionized shops have layoffs. However, there could be provisions about who is laid off and how. But, for example, the contract might specify by seniority, so that people get laid off in reverse order of hiring, with no regard to performance. Some might like that, others might not.

@a5 with the way the IT industry has become commoditized, we need collective bargaining across the board... the most visible part of that is the gaming sector of course but we're all affected these days

In a company where people are afraid to even share what their salary is, it would be very difficult to get that kind of solidarity going.

@a6 so? I mean if you're laid off and your jobless right now anyways? So it doesn't matter really if they close down the office or they let everybody go or whatever because they're going to let you go no matter what, as we have seen, year after year.

You actually have nothing to lose, not even your job because they'll take it from you anyways.

So why not fight back?

Oracle employees tried to unionize in Chile and the center was closed.

@a3 so therefore all collective bargaining is bad, any kind of negotiation that we could do as a group is bad, etc? Like we should just give up because of your anecdote that may not even be true or something you don't know about?
