Thread regarding Fiserv Inc. layoffs

Competence level of staffing?

So I am interviewing with Fiserv and wondering.... There was not any test of hard skills for engineering related roles and I'm through the final round. Are the people I will work with going to be competent or passionate? I don't really have other options because this market su-ks; I am concerned that I wasn't given a real technical test like most jobs through the whole process so it feels like anyone could bullsh-t their whole way through. So being passionate at my job and wanting to work with people like minded, I am worried that I'll work with people who are not qualified as that is a big problem in some sh-t enterprise software companies. Especially because this is a high level IC role, I don't want to be babysitting people in corporate America if the place is not meritocratic for people who are passionate and want to do good work. Life is short.

What do you think of your colleagues? Are they staying on top of their game and know things about the industry? Do you need to hand hold people or are people acting like adults? Or am I going to be a janitor of people who don't give a fu-k about how they spend a big chunk of their day. I am wondering if I just got lucky that nobody has asked me to do any real coding or real system design work on my interview or not. Just really hoping that people excel at what they do here and its not one of those places where people are seat warming and there is no brain neurons firing. I have between this and another job, so neither seem amazing but it seems at least with the new CEO things have been moving in a good direction on this board and am hopeful that I won't be wasting my time dealing with more than average incompetence -- or people who don't care to manage.

Thank you.

seat warming and there is no brain neurons firing - honestly you hit the nail in the head here. there are definitely different jobs and companies that will have you be completing more interesting work and working with smarter people. been here for 2 years and critical thinking at Fiserv doesn't matter... seems like the loudest person in the room and favoritism does.

You will not have permission to run the executable you just compiled on your system. The operating system will stop you. Your coworkers will have tolerated that for two or three years. The most basic tasks can be insufferably cumbersome. Many people have left for a better employer.

The hiring criteria is as follows:

  • Has pulse (optional)

Congratulations on passing the criteria to work at Fiserv!

This reads like a joke, but if you choose to work here you will see how accurate this is.

(Some people care enough to tough it out this long.)

@bm Who mentioned white boarding? I said hard technical skills tested; actually performing the job. This isn't about your fragile ego or hurt feelings.

I want to know that people I will work with can do basic things or give a sh-t in a tech role. Since I was not given any basic realistic test; I had not a great feeling, because it's a common course of business that being in software you have to actually do work? Hence I am asking here! It is a top result in search for Fiserv.

If I wanted to grind leetcode, I would be on a FAANG board. Hopefully people in the real company are more mentally well adjusted than they are here. I am guessing some sales intern is replying with zero business to be touching systems, IT/software.

Fiserv is a wasteland and there are a lot of variability since its a hodge podge of various acquistions. Highly dependent on which group you join

Nobody at Fiserv cares. Don’t expect anything and you won’t be disappointed

So you are still interviewing and had to come here to rant about a prospective employer? Yeah , we believe you! Yes, we will buy that NY bridge! You should look for a job in creative writing. You act like you are some genius with FANG offers. Your post reeks of a below average employee posting a rant. Most people at Fiserv are competent and work hard. We just don’t get the benefits. If you think you are high and mighty feel free to take up the other offer. We can assure you we don’t care. You are really not that important

It ain’t apple dude, it’s a big outsourcer. There are smart people who care. There are some losers. maybe more than elsewhere. frank had to approve every janitor hire, so managers couldn’t fire losers because they wouldn’t get a replacement. Probably they didn’t give you a test because hr is overwhelmed and hasn’t had a lot of practice hiring people. It does seems to be getting better. a lot of fresh faces coming in but the healing process from removing that gigantic cancerous ahole takes time.
