Using Laptop/COU Out of Country?

Anyone knows how to get approved to use COU or Laptop out of the United States? There’s someone on my team going on a longer trip and wanted to stay informed of what’s happening at T (which I don’t blame her). I know there’s a process but don’t know exactly how it works.

I took my COU out of country for about a month.

I didn’t care about staying in touch with any work stuff, I just wanted to use the unlimited data plan.

Data didn’t work though, so I guess it wasn’t worth it. I was able to check outlook and teams though.

I didn’t have any issues with anyone when I came back to work… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Your mileage may vary

How is checking an email occasionally and making an occasional phone call working without authorization – nobody knows:) Just legal blowing it out of proportion.

Easy: the govt of whatever country you’re in passes a law saying it is

as far our org knows, COU is allowed. There was an exception made 2 years ago that COU would be allowed. One poster states it is not allowed

It is up to a specific organization. Mine does not allow COU unless an official trip. BYOD was ok to check occasional email etc. But there is no more BYOD.
This guidance is based on a concern that US employees working overseas without authorization can expose the company to liability. How is checking an email occasionally and making an occasional phone call working without authorization – nobody knows:) Just legal blowing it out of proportion.
Perhaps security is an additional concern. Although security breaches can and do happen in the US as well.

Your COU won’t work internationally anyway. Doesn’t work in Canada.

It has gotten worse over the years. It used to be you could take a COU or BYOD. You could lurk and check your mails occasionally. Respond when really needed, take a phone call. Not desirable, but no issues.
Not anymore. No more BYOD. You cannot take COU out of country. Unless you are on official business trip. Or senior enough that rules don’t apply to you. I know one dude was fired for taking his COU laptop and using it overseas. He was told to fly back ASAP and bring it back home. When he said no (not until vacation is over), he came back to join the ranks of unemployed.
Don’t do it.

It’s not possible to get an exception due to tax purposes. She can stay in touch with you all using WhatsApp.

Ridiculous.

She’s not that important.

Go on vacation and leave that stuff at work.
