Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Severance Pay Timeline

Recently laid off 42 year Legacy T employee here. I was hit in the last wave and grudgingly decided enough was enough. Curious if anyone has input on how long it will take to get my $225k severance check.

@bt You put in 30 years or more and put up with BS but stay cause the money and benefits are decent. Damn right they owe us!! All the so called “dead weight” is knowledge walking out the door.

Congrats! I understand it takes about 30 days. 10 days ago, I accepted the SIPP + $50k offer after 35 years….Nothing like being a former ATT employee!!!

Stop judging people and when they should decide to leave as you do not know their financial situation so do not even try to compare or inquire. If the person is good at their job and adds business value they should stay as long as they want and are needed. I was trained by a 69 year old and they were the best mentor anyone could have which really changed my outlook on things.

@f8

Since dude sounds like craft, it's possible he's only 60 years old. That is not considered retirement age, so no reason why he can't still be here. Can't get Medicare until 65, and AT&T started sc--wing retirees on bridge benefits for pre-Medicare eligible folks. This type of worker is the last of the folks who could start and end a career with the same company, particularly if they are not college educated. Many would hire on right out of HS, so while they definitely became (or could become) skilled labor, they might not have the career hopping opportunities of the college educated. Don't knock them; their knowledge has kept companies running far after the college boys leave, and no one knows how systems run.

42 years working here is the reason we need forced layoffs here.

There's varied answers given here bc we don't have enough info. Sounds like, with that amount of 'severance' that OP is craft. In which case, managers aren't really going to know the answers. If OP was a manager (which is highly doubtful), the severance would be paid within 45 days.

If OP is craft, he'd need to consult both the separation offer, particularly if it included any of the bonus $ that's recently been offered, and the CWA contract. Beyond that, why the heck didn't OP either ASK when the separation $ would be paid, pay attention to what he signed, or ASK HR when you might be expecting the money.

No less than 30 days, no more than 45.

It shouldn't take more than 45 days. My payout took about 35 days and aligned with the regular pay period. You can also call the HR support line for an exact date.

If you get the pay out you’ll get sc--wed by the SBC tax department in Dallas as they’ll withhold most of it and then you’ll need to get if back from feds in 2026. So garb your ankles Ned and get ready to squeal!!!!!

“ They may be waiting on Medicare due to health issues or taking care of family. ”
I’ve heard this since they took away the medical benefit; however, lots of folks aren’t in that boat, qualify for Medicare, full pensions, 401ks, sitting on an mountain of cash, and still stick around. You hear the same old, maybe in 2 more years that you heard 6 years ago. Bottom line, these people aren’t working like the rest of us. If they were, no way they stay. Most just don’t have a life outside work and don’t know what to do with themselves.

@af Maybe he got involuntary surplus pay which is double the regular vsp. 12 Houston techs in the DEG group got vsp and $50k extra. In my almost 29 years I have never heard of an offer like that! You don’t know peoples situations either. They may be waiting on Medicare due to health issues or taking care of family. Have you worked with a bunch of lazy as--s like I have that do just what is required to get by ? We that have put 1/2 our lives building this company deserve better so don’t bi--h cause we hold out for a small portion of what the higher ups get!!

The only people complaining about this are "managers" lol.
They are childish, angry and small minded.
They see someone getting something more than them and like small monkeys they think "We can't have that, so yours is no good".
Just RTO, move to try to save your job and quit complaining. Accept your 2 weeks severance when you are tapped.

"The termination allowance shall, at the option of the employee, be paid in a lump sum,
less applicable deductions, as income continuation in periodic installments, subject to
the limitations in Subparagraphs 3(a) and 3(b) below, or in two (2) equal payments (the
first payment to be made within thirty (30) calendar days of date of termination and the
second payment to be made on or about January 15th of the following year)."

The tax situation might indicate spreading the payment over two tax years.

“Let’s be for real how much ambition you’d had the last ten years? I see it over and over with so much dead weight laying around since they want the payout and the company owes you.”

This is so on point.

@OP AT&T lost its ethics, why you want to get rehired. Life is much better outside AT&T.

You people realize pre nineties, a lot of people started 17/18 years old in entry level positions. 42+18=60. So it’s easy to have 40+ years service and still be short of full SS retirement.

To think how selfish you been hiding behind seniority while the future of company was pushed out the door. Have you ever tried to improve your skills on your own? Let’s be for real how much ambition you’d had the last ten years? I see it over and over with so much dead weight laying around since they want the payout and the company owes you.
Thank you for finally going to the house!

I don’t think you were exactly “hit” with being laid off. You undoybatrdlg have seen the cesspool of layoffs over the years especially with older workers and just twiddled your thumbs for several years getting others to do your work and waiting for your own package.

$225k for 6 months pay - that would make you a VP or SVP. Begrudgingly left after 42 years? Brother, you should have retired years ago. It’s beyond me why folks that can retire are sticking around. Do you not have a life? The only people I know still working after 65 live in some fantasy world that the company would fall apart without them, no, it will be just fine. Go live your life, do fun things, enjoy the time you have left while you still have your health. For the love of God don’t waste your remaining years working here.

@OP I call BS, I was in the last wave after being four months shy of my rule of 75 and 25 years of service . Severance is 6 months MAX. and after taxes its a fraction of what you "think" you are going to get.. What you posted would have made you a orchestrator C-Suit person and we all know none of them clowns were let go.

I don’t believe you. Att could save money faster by laying off others and that’s exactly what they’ve been doing. Leg T 40 year guys have not been being laid off even when they don’t have work because of this incredibly high severance table. They lol offer voluntary severance instead.
