Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Layoff process questions

For those who've been through the recent cuts - how much warning did you actually get? Was there any attempt at transition support, or just a clean out your desk situation? Specifically wondering about reference letters - do they still provide those, or has that gone by the wayside too? Trying to prepare my exit strategy before the next round hits my department. The uncertainty is worse than the actual job most days.

Two weeks. They absolutely DO NOT want you to transition to another internal slot.

Of course they don't. The whole point is to reduce headcount, because the company is dying.

“ Two weeks.”

Although it’s two weeks when the official notice comes, the RTO initiative was announced corporate wide in spring 2023. T has actually provided over two years of notice.

May 2025 alumni here! I got the heads up from this site that 2 week notifications were happening for 4/28.
Official policy is no letters of rec, but employees can serve as your references on their own non-company time. While you're still employed you can use Workday for proof of employment, which Workday calls a reference letter. Generate that before you leave. Other suggestion is to change your withholding elections so your severance payment doesn't get taxed like crazy when paid out. Changes take a couple pay periods to update so if you try to do it when you get your 2 weeks notice, it might not be enough time. If you don't do this in time, you'll get a big tax refund later, but it's money you could have invested elsewhere.
Lastly, depending on the time of the year, spend your vacation time. If you already took more than you earned at the time of layoff notification, you don't have to pay it back.

For presence report termination they didn’t provide any warning. They just send a average report showing you are falling short and then they terminate later even if you sit average good hours in office.

@OP Two weeks. They absolutely DO NOT want you to transition to another internal slot. With two weeks you would have to apply for a job in work day that was just getting ready to close. If you are lucky enough to have an interview in flight, they will give you an additional 30 days in workday OFF PAYROLL to keep applying. If you don't have an interview in process they lock you at at the end of the two weeks. My attorney is working several age discrimination suits, and he aid that even if you have a job interview in flight he has yet to see anyone targeted get an offer and that internally they have been given the directive to not hire any surplus people. On your last three days they will give you a form for unemployment to show you were surplussed.

I am still here as management but I can tell you that reference letters are “officially” prohibited, per policy. Like most big corporations T will only provide employment verification, and that is handled by a 3rd party.
