Intel memories

For those that have been at Intel for awhile, what are memories that stood out?

After a long bloodbath in the DRAM memory business in 1985-86 Intel exited the unprofitable memory business to focus on microprocessors. I joined in May '87 and they were celebrating being "back in black" after being unprofitable for 18 consecutive months. They celebrated by throwing parties and every employee got a jar of black jelly beans like this: https://images.ctfassets.net/ytpxmi3h6kca/2HN8FjwrgH0B4OLrs4IoTz/f4697a4ca1062499c15dce674ffc5e03/1987_Back_in_the_Black_Jelly_Bean_Jar.jpg?fm=jpg&fl=progressive&q=90&w=638&h=720

Co-workers at Intel would sell pre-programmed satellite dish cards so you could get all the channels.

Those from Rio Rancho, remember the guy who did people's taxes, called the Burger King guy. He would help you get some huge tax refunds.

My third day at Intel, I asked my manager a question, and he responded by telling me that was the stupidest question anyone had ever asked him, and he ought to fire me then and there for being so stupid. It was at that moment that I realized I was not cut out to work at Intel.

Someone got sick and threw up in his helmet. The helmets had the hoses that connected to an air filter pack.

Was a college intern doing PCI chipset validation in the Folsom lab when Andy Grove created the huge public relations nightmare over the Pentium FDIV bug. Was quickly redeployed to a few large conference rooms converted to call centers so customers could call in to get their Pentiums replaced.

While doing PCI chipset validation, I would install UNIX and it would fail many times on the 47th out of 50 floppy disks. Fun times indeed! :-)

I remember when people did not spend all day hanging out in the cafe, posting on their phones and surfing the internet, thinking that no one was noticing.

Instead they were more concerned with earning a living in a challenging job market, always one step away from being fired, monitored by AI enabled cameras.

Yeah, 2026 was awesome!

There was an email from a guy who dated a coworker and basically committed scide because she was an absolute psychopath. Another mass email IT had to scramble to erase, I’m sure she got promoted after that.

Working hard in the fab all night and the guys sitting in the office taking credit for the work.
My time at intel involved working with the worst forms of life. I don't think they were human. They had the human suit but their soul was not human.

Remember when some areas would break up into three groups. Each group will work a certain amount of hours and the other two groups would be out of the fab. Oh wait that’s going on right now. lol

Omg remember that poor sad guy who sent the email to entire company about his wife's affair with a co-worker? IT couldn't erase that fast enough. Felt really sorry for the guy to be that desperate over it.

Debra C. hired Will I Am to be 'Creative Director'... waste of money.

Eric C. did a sponsorship with Formula One... waste of money.

Paul O. got on stage with some tigers for ISMC.... not a waste of money !!!

We should have known we had issues when we couldn't get our chips out on time for Apple. We caused them to delay their launch several times.

I remember a Circuit front page article saying "The desktop PC was making a comeback". Wishful thinking I guess. It was hard to watch Intel leadership flounder all of those years.
