Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

News

The news is full of coverage about the Paramount layoffs, but there’s barely a whisper about what’s happening at Nike. I guess we’re just not as headline-worthy. Who cares if hundreds of people here are losing their livelihoods when some writer from a show most people haven’t even heard of just got let go, right? Priorities.

Sorry to say, but there are actually worse things happening in the world and in our own backyard right now than a bunch of overpaid MBAs losing their jobs. There are folks literally fighting for their lives, getting ripped from their families, Senators getting shoved to the floor and getting arrested for nothing, military being mobilized against our citizens, Israel going to war in the middle east, Palestine being exterminated....sorry, but Nike doing sneaky layoffs is not big news right now, dude.

Why would they hide it? Investors love layoffs since it’s a cost reduction. Also, public companies typically disclose total headcount in annual reports.

These smaller layoffs have been happening everywhere for 3+ years now plus not replacing roles. What is barely in the news is that every large company are THOUSANDS less than what they once were.
My Dad works for a very large company that had 1000 FTE people in just his one building alone and they now have just 700 FTE people. The news reported last year that they expanded the building and added 100 jobs.
My friend works tech for a major insurance company. Publicly, they laid off 500 people, but the company is actually 9k less people in 2 years. Same thing at Nike and companies are just getting better at trying to hide it from investors.

It’s a bigger deal that Nike went silent on supporting pride yet that isn’t in the news either.

Who cares that a dime a dozen tech person for a company that makes shoes with a job that could be done in a 3rd world country is let go? Priorities.

Sorry but why do you have to feel so entitled that the world needs to know you lost your job. Nike is just another big company and not even as big as others. We aren’t really that special when push comes to shove.

This is nothing in the bigger Nike footprint. Hardly news worthy and crazy anyone would expect it to be for a few hundred people in a $50B company. Sure for people in tech it’s rattling to lose hundreds of people in a thousands of people org but bigger stories out there than this one. Only local people would care.

Guess letting go of 3% of GT staff isn’t news making.
