It's been quiet lately. Maybe layoffs have settled down for now.

They show up every year like the four seasons. The only thing more sure is death and taxes.

Layoffs are a routine thing every year at UHG. What's been different since about early 2023 is that the company is actively shrinking its workforce. In public filings, you'll notice that UHG has about 40k fewer employees than it did during the pandemic. Based on what I know firsthand, the adjustment to Medicare Advantage reimbursement rates is a large part of 'why' this is happening. As anyone whos been inside the business, or industry knows, Commercial and Medicaid plans drive volume, but Medicare is were you capture the profits. After the government changed reimbursement rates for those codes, UHG just had to get smaller (if you're thinking like a CFO). The business will continue to be pressured as long as the Commercial segment is soft, and states pull back on Medicaid funding.
This person is obviously new to UHG. LOL
If you work for UHG you will live in fear of layoffs until your number is called or you leave.
As Larry Renfro once said when asked about this, United will start the layoff plans as soon as last one was completed. It’s coming as we are an Accounting company and P&L next quarter drives our strategy.
Layoffs occur after every quarter ending. Wait until July.
When it comes to layoffs, I've learned the hard way that whenever you have to ask if there will be more layoffs, the answer is almost always yes, even if they say no.
