Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Industry Code changing to 9537?

If i’m not mistaken, I read a few weeks back when googling information about ATT, the company Industry Code 6535, might be changing to Industry Code 9537. I paid no attention to it at first, until I was reading through some layoff threads. Then I saw the industry code listed here in the company description. I began an extended search here and found a number of companies with Industry Code 9537, and Microsoft is one of them. Is Microsoft going to buy the failing little T company? Is this what all the layoffs and offshoring is all about?

I have a couple of friends who ended up at Microsoft with the Cloud acquisition and could not be happier. They also both work virtual and have not been laid off but some of their colleagues were let go.

Never gonna happen. Why would anybody buy a company with this much debt and antiquated infrastructure.

I work at Microsoft and I can tell you most assuredly that we are not looking to acquire AT&T. AT&T is known as the big wet dog. All potatoes, no meat. It’s a holding company, nothing more, nothing less. Not even another Telcom conglomerate would buy that debt ridden dog. Nice story though.

If MS was going to purchase AT&T it would have done it when T was trading at $14 a share.

As of now, there is no public indication that Microsoft is planning to acquire AT&T in its entirety. However, the two companies have engaged in significant strategic collaborations in recent years, particularly in the areas of cloud computing and telecommunications.

Key Collaborations Between Microsoft and AT&T

  1. Network Cloud Acquisition: In June 2021, Microsoft acquired AT&T’s Network Cloud technology and associated engineering talent. This move enabled AT&T to transition its 5G core network workloads to Microsoft’s Azure for Operators platform, enhancing scalability and efficiency. The acquisition also allowed Microsoft to offer carrier-grade cloud solutions to other telecom operators .
  2. Xandr Advertising Unit: In December 2021, Microsoft agreed to purchase AT&T’s advertising technology division, Xandr. This acquisition aimed to bolster Microsoft’s advertising capabilities, particularly in the evolving landscape of digital advertising that prioritizes consumer privacy .

Considerations Regarding a Full Acquisition

While these collaborations signify a deepening partnership, a full acquisition of AT&T by Microsoft would be unprecedented and complex. AT&T is a major telecommunications provider with extensive infrastructure and regulatory obligations. Such an acquisition would likely face significant regulatory scrutiny and require substantial financial investment.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft has previously invested in telecommunications companies, including a historical 3% stake in AT&T . However, there is no current evidence to suggest plans for a complete acquisition.

Microsoft is a better company, but lets not kid ourselves into thinking they would keep any of the AT&T employees if this were to happen. They have armies of employees in India at their disposal and as many H1B visas as they want.

This has been a rumor with significant probability for at least the past five years. There are certainly some benefits to both companies if they were to combine. Especially with net neutrality out of the way, Microsoft could add some preferential speed for private networks in business and gaming.
