Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

This used to be a good place to work.

I used to feel valued here but not anymore. RTO has been the worst thing that’s ever happened to this company. I used to appreciate the flexibility of being able to work from home without a pointless commute and was fine with going in the office when there was good reason like a real face to face meeting.

Before I would often go above and beyond b/c of that flexibility I was once allowed, working 10 hours a day or more if needed, and sometimes even just to get more things done faster. Now I do my 8 hours, drive over an hour home in traffic and don’t even consider doing anything more until the next day. They’ve certainly lost productivity from me and it’s not with any malicious intent, I’m just exhausted after spending nearly 15 hours a week driving that I mostly used to spend working instead.

I wasn’t working two jobs, or going to Costco, or golfing, or whatever other jokes you people like to make here. I have plenty to do and I actually like the work I do. The work is fulfilling, but the policy now is horrible and constantly makes me consider leaving. I like my job and I don’t want to leave but this is just atrocious, and I know I’m not alone. To right the ship, the fix is simple. End RTO, and win back the trust of the employees and instantly boost morale. You’d be surprised how quick the culture could change if you actually had happy employees.

For any people who take advantage, target and punish or terminate them, not the masses. If managers can’t identify the slackers then punish them, not the masses. This isn’t 1969 anymore, we don’t need to be sitting in an office to actually work. We are a global company and sell the ability to work from anywhere but don’t enable our own employees to do so.

The morale will only improve when the policy improves.

This has gone beyond just RTO. Look at the way employees have been treated over the past 2 years.

  • Most that were given the choice to move or leave only had a couple of weeks to make a life changing and huge financial decision
  • If you decided to leave, you were left wondering when your end date would be
  • No consideration for those that were within weeks or even days of "retirement" for end dates
  • No relocation benefits
  • No guarantee that you would have a job for any period of time after moving
  • Hiring people for remote positions and then give them limited time to decide to be "in the office" hundreds of miles away
  • Designing noisy, crowded offices without enough desks or parking, and then "leadership" is surprised at the turmoil
  • Claiming noise is caused by people not following "workplace etiquette" and making it the employees "fault", when the problem is lack of design in the offices they require us to be in
  • Lack of transparency about the motives for RTO
  • Constant layoffs while claiming all the time "we're hiring"
  • The claim "we will backfill as needed" those lost to closing offices, all the while having a hiring freeze
  • The list goes on....

Would going back to at least hybrid be nice. Absolutely. But our "leadership" does not value the employees at all. The current culture is one of fear and lies.

The very report they are supposed to be using to measure employee compliance is a study in incompetence. I hate to say that about a fellow IT person, and I hope its the tools and direction they've been given, but damn! They can't get keep the timezones straight, or accurate timings, or the data (October shows up, October goes away), or even run it on time. If you are doing what you are required to do, then it won't really matter. But it is an indicator and representation of our "leadership". This is how they lead.

I do like the people I work with, my supervisor, and even most of the work I do. That has been consistent for the past 20 years. But above my supervisor, they are mo--ns. Above VP, I truly believe they are hostile to employees and are only out for personal gain. Who cares if they sink the company in the process.

With the current job market and economy, I'll do a good job and I'll earn my paycheck. I'm not going anywhere now. But when the job market is good again, I'll be out. I hope a lot of others follow and leave the "leadership" with no one to lead and no one to get the work done.

When I work from home, I'm so focused on my work that I often don't even notice the time. I don't hate Mondays and I don't worship Fridays. I'm able to enjoy my job and put in a solid day's work without feeling stressed out or tired. Going to the office 5 days a week for the last 4 months, I've noticed that I'm back to dreading Mondays, I can't wait for Friday and I find myself watching the clock, counting the minutes until I can head home.
I wasn't a fan of going to the office 2-3 days a week when it was first implemented (after WFH for years before Covid). But after 5x8, I could see having a new outlook on a Hybrid model.
