Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Reducing severance??

Anyone else hearing the rumors that they plan on cutting back severance from a max of 6 months to 3 months? That would be the start to them eliminating it all together. From the rumors I’ve heard.

My team lost a third of the staff from resigning or company's firing in just the last 2 months and we were told no backfilling of those positions and the rest of the team just has to do more. We are already working a lot of extra hours on workdays and on weekends. I expect more of my remaining colleagues will quit soon. To top management it is just another way to save on severance pay while they continue to get their big compensation package for cutting cost for the company at the expense of the folks who are really getting things done for so long.

People told me they got good performance evaluation for so many years and suddenly just got a 'meet some rating in the 2024 year end eval. It seems like the company is just setting people up for firing to save on severance pay.

“NJ DOES NOT have a longer period unless they hit the WARN threshold, which they make sure not to do, so 6 months for NJ”

The threshold is 50 employees. If they want to do 49 per layoff, they’ll never meet any significant reduction in employees.

There’s NO doubt the C suiters would absolutely love to eliminate or (greatly) reduce severance. However, it’s unlikely they’ll do so any time soon…much to their chagrin.

Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure is to have a surplus. Unless you are union.

Stinky won’t reduce severance because in such case he is opening the door for class action lawsuits. Severance makes you quiet. You can’t sue T for their illegal actions once you agree to the payment.

This company does not give severance to help the people being let go it gives it to stop lawsuits. I don't see them doing away with six months.

If I had to guess I’d say having three large offices full of people in NJ actually help the rest of you

I don’t know. There are plenty of benefits just for people from California, Colorado or Washington state.

The longer New Jersey notice period doesn’t mean the rest of us have a longer notice period. You’re just a dead man walking longer.

So I don’t see New Jersey offices keeping us from losing severance
We won’t lose severance for other reasons such as the industry standard benefits as mentioned by others.

Of course the Stink has in many cases reduced severance to $0 as the Stink as made it so miserable to work at this $hithole that US employees just leave on their own.

The Stink is pleased!

Stink would love to eliminate the severance and pocket it, but the lawyers find it cheaper for you to sign your exit papers so you give up your right to sue Toxic-T. Want the pittance severance, sign - otherwise nadda for you!

I’m still angry that T stole our 4 day weekends with RTO.

Verizon does not cap out at a year unless you are director level or above. Below that, standard severance is 35 weeks.

They are already below industry standard after the last time they were reduced (2015).

Verizon still caps out a a year (where ours used to).

It would align with there other benefit reductions.

Our severance laws require corporations to pay severance 1 week per year of employment.

The majority of us would be paid more than 6mo if we were laid off. It would be pretty embarrassing for them to cut the rest of you while the law protects ours. Especially considering the current severance is lower than the industry standard.

I recall this rumor, starting around 2017ish.

I'm thinking, reducing severance to 3 months or less, might be one of the better things to happen.
By doing so, you might actually get laid off, rather than having to quit to avoid RTO in a different part of the country...

All of the personal reductions and severance cut backs are related to setting the stage for a large hedge fund take the company private. Plenty of write offs with the current debt.

The will be NO severance.. the winky team have mastered demoralizing management to the workers. We are told 8 to 5 .. yet if you take sh$t without asking.. your FIrED!
There is Zero leadership.. any leaders have been moved aside and there are “managers” of mico eyes .. and breaking the spirits of employees. If your in sales.. and have succeeded .. your reward is a huge bump in quota, un attainable. One day.. these “managers” will reap what they have sown… and will fall on their face… and today… NO one respects them.

There is no need to lower severance yet. Currently enough employees are resigning but not meeting the bare minimum 5x8 threshold.

They will do ANYTHING they can to get rid of badged employees.
There is a reason T (as a company) is made up of 40% badged employees and 60% contractors.

PERIOD.

Same rumors come out every 6 months for the last 10 or 15 years. And seriously how would anybody who reads this actually know if they are or not until they do.

If they want to incentize people to leave then keep the 6 mos and give them the medecare bridge back.

Been hearing it since RTO was announced. I’m guessing that people aren’t quitting and retiring fast enough, so they are going to incentivize people even more.

This has been a rumor here for years (not months).

Unlikely.

And it’s unlikely because it’s already below average for a company this size.
