I got RIF'ed last year after more than two decades of service. Got severance and luckily had a public sector job potentially lined up before I was even let go, but had postponed my start date because I thought I'd be finishing the year at Fiserv (the public sector job was not federal level thankfully).
Anyway, despite me being productive and working on KT, Fiserv let me go earlier than planned. Whatevs. For the last five months off, I've been taking unemployment (in a blue state where the UI benefits are actually livable). Have enjoyed the time off and I finally start my new gig a week from Monday at a pay rate that's only slightly lower than I was making at Fiserv. I also learned a trade in the meantime that's going to pay extremely well moonlighting until I possibly reach a tipping point and do it full time. No regrets waiting for the RIF...
