Remote leaders stripped from their titles

A friend of mine who still works at Fiserv was stripped from his leadership role and converted into an individual contributor simply because he's remote. Has anyone heard of this?

They are offering some leaders choices. Relocate to a go-forward location and keep your job, title, and current team; become an individual contributor, lose title and team and still stay remote; or be severed from the company. However, they are also starting to come after individual contributors who are not in very specific roles that are designated remote, so becoming and IC is fraught with peril.

This is not new. This started a few years back.

Sounds to me like they are finally making a few sound business decisions. There is such a thing as too much management.

I know this strings for the person impacted, but i have long felt you should not have a director person and no staff, or a very small staff.

Aside from the remote aspect. If you're a manager, director, you better have 6 or 7 direct reports or expect to be gone. And the direct reports can't be contractors.

Yes it’s true. Become and individual contributors or you are fired.

So do they change the title or just get rid of reports. Asking because I know of some people with a Director title that don't have any reports

Wow....really makes you want to continue your career with the company. You work hard and give it all, then they take away all your employees and change your title to contributor. As an employee your goal is to grow with the company and take steps forward not backwards.

This is a FD thing... you need to have x direct reports depending in the management level otherwise they make you an individual contributor. So they chase away talent, lay off a bunch of people & refuse to backfill - then say you don't have enough direct reports to be management.... otherwise known as "quiet firing"

Yes - there are doing this to leaders that are remote or not at a go forward location.
