I'm new and I was recently told by my boss that I need to have 24/7 availability (I'm in tech) and that really didn't sit right with me? Is this really something that's expected?

Techs get a premium for being on standby (on call).
I am a tech at vz and we have weekly on call. We are a union shop and my group is tight. I take 90% of the on call and I almost doubled my salary last year. No complaints out of me.
Not when your union put in 35 37 40 and depends what area anything over is called overtime. You just got played never give your all and availbility to this company they will use you like a cheap rag and never remember your sacrifices. Hans needs a new ferrari back to work.
Have to be available 24/7 in case VZ India needs something...
you just start..then yup
If you are not an hourly wage employee, then the company owns your time. Get used to it.
It’s absolutely expected. I was in IT for 20+ years at Verizon and worked long weekends for scheduled production deployments and was called off hours many times through the week after working an 8-10 hour day. And wasn’t paid for any of that extra time because I was “salary/exempt”. Lol. Took the VSP in 2019 thank god. It was a sweatshop.
“….and that really didn't sit right with me? “
Sounds suspiciously fake to me.
Vz owns you. Act accordingly.
What kind of tech expertise ? Issue in network or CX ?
If you are in production support for network, it’s expected.
If you support a team, especially a team with things in Network / Production, you need to be reachable 24/7 in case there is an issue. This is common sense. Of course, you should be properly compensated if you are called off hours, either by pay or time off later. Is this really rocket science?
That is a reflection of “scott deloach” poor leadership amd his 80s style of running tech.
There’s a lot of roles that are “technically 24/7” … however that’s not the experience of most.
Id suggest talking with your peers and observing their behavior rather than relying on internet strangers for this one.
