and then you die, so work the very least you possibly can and gtfo asap. After 40+ years here, this is my best and most honest advice I can share with younger guys or gals.

Everything was great at SWB until they bought the sinking ship that was att and adopted all their losing ways.
Always hard to judge others and impossible to really know their story. The OP, for example, started right out of high school and is now 58 so at least 4 years before SS. Also, a chunk of his 401k had to be used for medical costs. He's just now realizing he would have been better off not working his a$$ off for this company.
If you have 40 years here your advice is NOT GOOD

40 years of service should put you right about 65. Hopefully you’ve put in for retirement. You would be eligible for SSI and Medicare. With your pension if you ran the numbers, you would probably be making the same money or even more. I encourage everyone to do the math, you might be surprised and find out you’re losing money continuing to work or you are working for next to nothing.

Well that right there is some half baked baboonery jive talk. I and team dooes the supporting of said first guy. So please, do the needful and ask your supervisor.
Yes, Bellsouth was a much better company than SWB. The worst and most dishonest boss was a SWB employee. I am glad he is gone.

Back when it was Pac Bell it was a wonderful place to work. They actually cared for their employees.
