Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

So many “doers” gone

It has become so frustrating watching so many talented, dedicated employees essentially get kicked out of this company due to RTO. This especially on the heels of a town hall where the topic was preaching how much we need “doers”.

I have seen individual contributors cut directly by T, quickly jump ship for other jobs, and lately, I have seen more and more people just candidly posting to socials that they’re seeking new opps externally.

Do we really want doers? Or, do we just want seats filled? And, the ones left have such low morale I can see the work being directly impacted. Truly not understanding what we are accomplishing here.

I am highly rated, my boss says I'm definitely a keeper. You may as well say my boss told me I was safe. I don't even have to move to Dallas or Atlanta. What a relief!

“ We need to cut more of my coworkers.”

After the C suite & 2+ layers of “VP’s”, YOU need to be next on the axefall list.

I was one of the few on the “daily commit” report.
My supervisor sent out the report to everyone on my team, so I verified this, not just memeing “high performer”

I’m set to be fired in June for relocation.

Let that sink in, out of a supposed only ~400 employees who actually commit code daily, they’re going to fire some for being in the wrong location.

Good luck AT&T.

I was a do’er but was told I can only DO it from ATL or DLS.
So now I’m a do’er for a competitor. I hope everyone does the same.

“ I am very much needed”

Every team has “this” guy.
Every team hates “this” guy.

You won’t be missed.

Every now and then the "leadership" gets outraged that employees have evolved into what the company and its policies have encouraged them to be. Which is not and never has been "doers".

I accomplished nothing of any importance at all the last 5 years or so. But I did plenty - mind numbing BS about documenting vulnerabilities that can't and won't be fixed because there's no budget to update the software. MOTS updates or whatever the new version is called (Yay - I'm already forgetting the BS!) Retiring "underutilized" systems which makes us look efficient on a report while saving trivial $ and massively increasing risks to the business. And so on. And I was very good at all of it and at keeping it off the plates of the doers who worked for me - and so I was rewarded and valued right up until I decided to retire instead of move.

And of course they have no idea of how to measure the "doing" except through more mind numbing BS. I'd rather have had my guys stare at a wall for 2 days, type nothing, and then finally modify one line of code, than generate noise for some report.

So now code commits will replace function points which replaced klocs which replaced... The BS goes on forever.

Just go to the office. That is the kind of "doer" they want. WFH was fun while it lasted. But it's over now!

"Employee/contractor cost is one of the largest costs that he can control . . ."

This is actually hilarious since I am very much needed but refuse to move and waiting for that hammer to drop. I have already been asked if I would come back as a contractor since they know they are sc--wed with all the loss of talent. My answer was "only for pay that is over and above my present compensation package." Not taking a pay cut to do the same work. Hurts Stank more than me.

"Truly not understanding what we are accomplishing here."

All "we" are accomplishing is reducing operating expense . . . that is the entire point. Stank cannot grow revenue so he HAS to pull the expense lever. Employee/contractor cost is one of the largest costs that he can control . . . so out the door we go.
Until we get a leader who knows how to increase revenue we will continue to reduce head count. VZ did $12B more in revenue with 50K fewer employees in 2024 than AT&T.
