They set your quota to superhard then then add 20%. If you dare to have a good month your quota will be jacked up the next month so they can take it all back again. Chances are if you hit quota it's because you got lucky while your co-workers caught the usual traffic and are now submitting promo correction forms instead of taking lunch. Luckily for you, and thanks to shady McCo-worker's sneaky 2nd number sales pitch and some artful cherry picking he reaches quota and for the next 2 months you also get stuck with a higher quota just in time for the slow season. Now after working twice as hard and recieved 80% of your targeted commission selling ethically while McFly gets praised even though he hasn't made it to work on time once this week. Then while you work your butt off to meet the newest impossible sales targets you end up spending your morning fixing problems that should belong to another department but their english or system comprehension doesnt meet the needed requirement so they were sent to the store causing you to have zero real sales opportunities but earned you a talking to from your manager about why your banner close rate & priority upgrades are so low. They would know for themselves but instead of being on the sales floor they were on a call about why the pamamont+ sales are down week over week. Now, the store is slow and they throw you on the hamster wheel to make calls, prost---te perks or some other downtime task while preaching to put everything "in the quote" to try to get the added bump of some customer not paying attention and getting stuck with a home protection service or Walmart plus perk that some other smuck will get stuck fixing 8 months down the road paying them back in karma for the evil deed they did the day before. But there is light at the end of the tunnel because you have the weekend contest to win! Now, you can work 3 times as hard to earn a fill the fridge so you can get paid in energy drinks and rice crispy treats. If you're really lucky you will get mid-coached by your DM who doesn't understand why you aren't using your AI tool to help tell your customer what they need to buy. Meanwhile, your managers are more worried about shouting out the fake joy on slack then helping you with a customer escalation. And you think you can still win? Ha. No winning for you!

So true. I'm 0-15-1 since joining verizon moving over from a direct agent. Less lying and less pay but more stress. I can't win.

True post OP. They just wish most people are too d-mb and willing to ignore this.
They really can't make and accurate quota and it's been apparent for quite some time. Just before the pandemic in 2019, quotas had become so outrageous that it wasn't even worth trying. The 20% lift month over month and year over year just isn't sustainable. Especially when the big three carriers are just cycling customers and looking for that 20% in products like HUM or Netflix perks.
That's partially why they went to team commission. which for obvious reasons didn't and doesn't work. Even though they tried every which way to make it work. Incentives drive behaviors and they are looking for sales, there is only one way to get those and that's with incentives. However they are incentivized as a company to give you as little as possible for those sales.
IMO commission doesn't work with this landscape or job any more but also not having commission doesn't work. I don't know what the answer is though.
I do wish instead of pizza parties they just paid us more. \o/
