Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Are your AVP's worthless?

My AVP does not know anything. He just uses fancy words and stupid phrases during meetings to appear smart. Probably got the job through connections. Why does this position even exist?

Not sure why my view stating that, "Mine is worthless, but I know many that aren't" was downvoted. You can't overgeneralize based on a title. I work with may cross functional orgs, and it's true, there are quite a few AVP's who aren't worth a damn. But that extends to all management levels, not just L4+. The problem is the concentration of power is held almost exclusively at L5+...
Point being, in my experience, there are at least 3 AVP's I feel thrive in their role. Granted, they are the exception, but I know plenty of M2/M3's that I hold very little esteem for.

"I know what AVPs are good at. Changing the orgs names!"

I remember "Architecture & Shared Services."

Good one, boss!

“ Mine was an Indian woman who had one skill that didn't translate into our org. Round peg into a square hole. Any outage our team had, she tried to look for roaming opportunities and that was it. All she knew how to do.”

lol I know who you are referring to. 100% spot on. Totally clueless.

My AVP kissed the right bootyholes to get the job. That’s about the only qualification. Oh and he’s under 50.

Most of the VP level is worthless now since everything is being dictated from the C level down.

“ My AVP is great. Technically knowledgeable to an extreme, solid leader, and cares about his team.”

Suuure. You sound like his PR man/cabin boy.

My AVP is great. Technically knowledgeable to an extreme, solid leader, and cares about his team.

There are many more of them at AT&T but the 5 - 10 disgruntled nmbnt$ who constantly post and repost on this forum tip the scales way too much.

Get a life you sad sacks.

At least two levels of superfluous “VP’s” need to be outright eliminated.

But I have weekly meetings to talk about the same thing we talked about last week, I’m impotent, err important.

Seems that’s the way to leave their mark. Remember when I renamed that group to something that made no sense? Yup, that was me! I did something!

Affirmative. I can respect a useless middle manager who ONLY does nothing. They are just collecting a paycheck. However my AVP actively makes our job harder and costs the company money. All I ask is leadership who does not actively try to prevent us from succeeding.

“Try having your AVP in Israel. We get so little information about what should be happening in our org in the U.S.”

Tell me you have no idea that you’re getting laid off without telling me you’re getting laid off. Dude, brace yourself and be ready.

Try having your AVP in Israel. We get so little information about what should be happening in our org in the U.S. Its like we are out on our own. Which would be great, except my director doesn't "take the reigns" and actually take care of business. Its just "we'll have to wait and see".

“My AVP is a woman who seems to feel the need to prove herself.”

My AVP is also a woman but she doesn’t feel the need to prove herself in the least.
She doesn’t even know she should, could or ‘wood’
