Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

We can't afford major layoffs

Not sure about other groups, but we can't afford any more layoffs. We've been able to pick up after people who've been laid off so far or who have quit, but we are at our limit. If they remove any more people I feel like things could easily fall apart. Now, if they plan to cut the management levels drastically, that I can see. Nobody would have any issues with that.

Hans and the BOD do not care. It's cut, cut, cut. Cut, cut, cut. VZ has become the island where the water continues to rise, rise, rise and there is less dry land remaining each day and Hans & the BOD periodically vote employees off of the island to keep themselves on what little dry land is left. As long as they keep themselves dry, they don't care about the rest of the people that built the company and helped keep it strong until Hans took over. Cut, cut, cut. Cut, cut, cut.

The remaining of the landline telephony also has ruthless competition.

Let us not forgotten the further extension of the competition, Comcast, no unionized employees.... FIOS, there is more competition, the other cable companies, Charter, Lumen, and other smaller companies. FIOS has unionized employees....

much of the work being done or touted as a must do is nothing more than a director or someone near that level making work to justify his/her existence.
what needs to be done is eliminate useless work, cancel foolish projects that actually offer no real benefit to company or customer. streamline....we are a damn phone/internet/tv company, we provide a service and bill for that service.....why do we complicate the he-l out of something so simple. customers DO NOT CARE...they want a service that works and a bill they can understand....other than that they want to be left alone

More importantly, Magenta pink, unlike VZ and Ma Bell, has no unionized employees.

Watch it, dont generalize about boomers, not being competent..... There are white-collar boomer(s) having a vested interest as well whom carry forward the tasks at hand, which meet/exceed. And this generational boomer of asian-indian descent with vested service reminds you to tread carefully!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, simply conjecture, as at VZ, as across this great country, the overall intellect, and work ethic is on the demise. The gratuitous notion of a role model employee is increasing whereby the meet/exceed employee is decreasing.

There is still 10-25% that can be reduced

boomers have gotten comfortable with being d-mb

I can’t speak for other groups but in Network Ops on the wireless side things have been automated quite rapidly in the last couple of years. In Nokia markets Service Portal builds everything for us. Makes the necessary changes in the 7750s and spits out the CSR config/bof file. IOP (when it works) is pretty much making it a couple clicks of the mouse and bam!, the device is integrated. While this may help speed up the process it will lead to a “d-mbing down” of the NFEs. Which makes outages last longer because skills have been lost. Contractors are already installing the equipment, if they allow them to add a couple of IPs they won’t need nearly as many people in the field. ….think about it…. Some geographically separated group establishes initial connectivity to a device and takes over from there, a RRH goes bad…..send a tower crew and have them work with the FAST….I guess my rambling post is just saying never think the company won’t cut deeper. It’s the only thing they know how to do….take advantage of tuition assistance and network…prepare yourself…..you never know when your number is up!

Employee count went to 155K to 118K and plan is to offshore most of the work
end of day , VZ is not going anywhere.
As it might sound crazy , but it is too important and too big to fail

This article came out in 2018 when the VSP happened. It predicts what happens next to Verizon and so far completely accurate.

What you are describing is the inevitable death-spiral phase of a company that can’t grow and innovate, and which has no playbook other than RIF’s. RIF, then results don’t improve, RIF some more, results still don’t improve. Employees get over burdened, burned out, demoralized, and apathetic. Management RIF’s some more. Rinse and repeat. This is a strategy to swirl the toilet, not to revive and build into something better. But RIF they will. The sun is setting on this company. Good luck.

My view... The company doesn't innovate and it's reward system is terrible. Take risks and fail and you will be punished. Do only enough to get by and keep the lights on and you get promoted.

Way too many directors and associate directors out there. Trim that fat first.

The work just won't be done. Like the person said, too much of the work is useless stuff. They can eliminate the directors and VPs that generate that work too. Ask yourself, if your team is eliminated, how does that impact the physical network, core billing and payment systems, or do you sell? Everything else is superfluous .

There are many groups with too many people doing the same job and too many managers that dont manage people- they will lay people off and other groups will absorb the work or it will cease. So much work is done that does not matter or isnt being utilized once its gone people wont even notice.
