No no no….. he said 2/3rds fewer central offices by 2029. He also said that’s why the consolidation to hubs. The main point was the wire centers that aren’t profitable need to be shed, and carrier of last resort negotiations are in progress since there are other ways to get connected in rural areas now instead of copper. He even mentioned satellite ie a competitor.

Repeating this, because this is what I heard, too. COs, not employees.

Anybody can lose their hair, become CEO and babble some random nonsense on a town hall in front of a bunch of employees that would rather be listening to fingernails on a chalkboard. This guy couldn’t plan his way out of a paper bag ripped wide open by other telecoms eating his lunch. 2029? HA! He will be fired before most of us. This guy and his CTO wonder boy is one major headline away from both being canned.

Long story short.

If you don’t have fiber in your turf you won’t be working here by the end of 2029.

If you project manage or support copper wireline services you need to find a new role.

If you currently work in an area that has both fiber and copper, the % of copper retired will probably match the % of techs cut. (Probably a higher % due to the reliability of fiber)

Barring fed bailout, this place won’t be here in 2029. It’ll have been chopped up (along with massive debt) & sold piecemeal. For anyone who says “nobody wants all that debt”…you’re correct, that’s why they divvy it up amongst the piece parts.

Why are you worried about four years from now? It seems like we are on a pattern of losing about 10,000 employees a year. By 2029 we should be around 100,000.

If that is true, they're going to have to start taking it from the bottom (union at 62k employees=>40% of headcount, 50% of stateside headcount) and upper management, because there is a quickly dwindling amount of meat in the middle (L1-L-2 management).
