Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

A positive note for possible RIF'D employees

Last year, late October they gave me the canned speech. Well..... I know I can't change it or stop it, but they say you can apply for other positions within Verizon. Why would you?? The grass isn't any greener over there, plus the RIF will come to that group at some point. They pay you until the end of the year and other companies begin to hire in January. (You also receive your severance and can apply for unemployment)

I suggest moving on and disassociateing yourself with Verizon. They don't want me and I don't want them ... I thought to myself!

I moved my phone lines to T-mobile and never looked back. However, I spent so much time at Verizon and now I'm older, who will want to hire me I thought?

Well let me tell you, alot of people!! People know the Verizon name, even if they don't know how it is to work for them.

I applied for maybe 6 positions
and on my first interview - I got the job. I took a temp to hire position. The pay was a little higher then Verizon was paying, so I through okay.

After 3 months, my new boss began talking about bring me on as full time employee. He ask what will it take to bring you on full time... then he said don't cut yourself short and regret the amount you ask for.

I thought well this is my chance, I ask for $30k more a year thinking he would say, well we can only offer... and to my shock he said I think we can do a little better and gave me $35k.

I couldn't believe my new boss actually cared enough to give me more than I ask for. I love my new boss, he's funny, always willing to help, super smart plus supportive!!

I only came back to the website after hearing some of my friends who still work there talking about the RIF.

If it happens to you don't think it's the end of your world like I did. There are opportunities for even better jobs and higher pay with companies and employers who care about their employees.

Stay strong V team and believe in yourself, your work ethic and knowledge beause its worth alot!!!

I am in VCG. In 2021, a peer of mine was laid off and I absorbed his territory and work load. He and all the others in the group who were laid off were not to do any more work other than job/interview prep

@nuf+1jg8HQpH I don't know what department you are in but we had people that had to continue doing their job during the last RIF. My ED stated to everyone that if you are not looking for a job, then you need to do your current job. The ED then stated you will only be paid if you are doing one or the other, failure to do that and you will not be paid for those hours.

Once you are told you are being severed, you are to stop all work related activities immediately unless it pertains to applying internally. Even though you are on payroll for another month or two, you do not perform your regular work activities effective immediately. Your manager communicates the transfer of work to whoever will be taking it over

Curious - what did you do during the time between being told you were to be Riffed by XX date and when it happened? Did you continue to work hard, transition your work in earnest, or did you switch gears and use work time to start looking for your next gig?

The reason Union Wireline workers only make 85 k / year is they can’t read. OP got 35k > than what he was making at Verizon.

Great post! I agree. So many other better employers to work for. You're underpaid, overworked and expected to hit outrageous metrics. Its not worth your stress. Find another company so you can be happy and support your family at the same time. Otherwise you'll be depressed working hard for this hanzi scheme.
