Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

It is time to cling to my job

With all the layoff at Oracle, and tens of thousands being let go by Musk and MZ, plus talk of layoffs at Amazon, this is not the time to jump ship! I watched a ten year guy go down, and have seen his aging and fear!

I know that they will accuse me of being a perfect example of a doormat, but for now I will put up with management and all the insane administrative tasks. I have kids to feed and rent to pay!

But what I wii do is continue to upgrade my skills, and look for opportunities, even if that means going independent. I am a warship preparing for rough seas!

You have not watched your friends leave!
Worried about how long they can go before selling the house.
Worried about keeping family happy in six weeks.

Thanks to the general incompetency of management, I have remained in place. Still doing 2-3 days of work.

No need to "cling" when the upper folks are oblivious.

Most states allow companies to let employees go at any time without notice. They are “at will” employers and on the other side you are free to quit at anytime. If you quit then being rehired depends on the circumstances you left under.

An employer shouldn’t give you a reason. And should only say yes or no you worked there if another employer calls. Most companies now have HR software. If a new employer calls, the former employee has to authorize release of the information. If they choose not to release the information the new company may not wish to hire that person.

If there is a mass layoff then the warn notice needs to be filed. Depending on the state.

If job functions are changing then the employer should have the employee sign a copy of the new job description.

Making your job unreasonably hard is constructive dismissal which is wrongful termination (forcing you to quit). Lying about someone's performance is defamation. If it's defamation in writing it's libel, if it was verbal, it's slander. In a defamation case you may be entitled to restitution. You are not a doormat, you are protected by the law... unless you signed an arbitration clause.

Well, you know how to assess your situation best. Nobody else can help you there. Sure, they can give you advice, but at the end of the day, you truly know best and are the only one accountable for your decisions. If you feel your best option is to sit tight, then sit tight. Upgrading your skills, even in the best of times, is a great idea. Tech has always been like sands in the desert, it's always moving, shifting. I was in the business for over 30 years and that is the one thing that has always remained the same, so you need to be adaptable and be able to go with the flow. Being a COBOL programmer in the 80's was a good thing, now not so good. Same for Java. It some point it will go the way of COBOL and is doing so. IF you can keep up with the changes and shift with them, you will always be successful in some form or another.

The very idea that you understand the situation you are in, gives you a leg up, have a plan and as many contingencies as you can practically implement and you will be OK. What we are in right not is not so unique and the smart ones will always find a way to navigate out of these stormy waters.

It is clear you are one of the smart ones. Be well.

There are tech positions with private companies. You are not a doormat.
You have responsibilities. Those they say if you don’t like it, leave… they are bullies. The last thing you want is tech company IF hiring, now ….they most likely will layoff
Better to stay put and take your chances ….until you find what works for you..

Private Company in an industry that is not affected by the economy as much with your skill set are most likely available …
All that is going on ..is a shift.
Many Big tech corp are on their way out.
Oracle by (recent) choice.

Big Tech will get worse - it’s really is over at Oracle -some can’t face reality but they will… at some point in the not too distant future.
Don’t know where you live and/or if willing to relocate ….but there are jobs in Huntsville AL. And other locations for defense contractors.
The word is out most everywhere that Oracle VPs will not be hired. Nobody want that negativity in their company.

You and your family will be ok.

Yes very few big tech firms hiring right now. Our products not selling, I'm a sitting duck. Hoping to ride this out but not likely.

Have been putting out feelers, updated resume, applying to anything that's open... but resigned to the likelihood that I'll be laid off within the next 6 months and it may be years until my career ever gets back on track. Might leave tech altogether, we'll see. I'm so unhappy and miserable, and it feels like things will only get worse next year.

Made such a mistake coming to Oracle. Might be a career ki---r.

Big tech has harnessed the best and the brightest to pull their wagons. Imagine what will happen as the stallion’s are set free!

Be smart. Be inventive, use the skills that they hired you to do, and you will be the next big tech.
