Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

This is a very bad time to get RIFed

It is better to find a new offer and leave this place voluntarily. I'm trying to keep my job by working more than ever and giving my best, although I am aware that this does not guarantee that my job will become any safer.
Is there any way to reduce the chances of getting cut? Is it possible to make yourself indispensable?

Leaving on your own = no severance pay or COBRA.

Being "indispensable" doesn't mean diddly. I knew plenty of those I would consider "indispensable" gone in an instant. As DeGaulle famously said "The graveyards are full on indispensable men". If you are that worried, get your exit strategy in motion. Nothing you can say or do at this point will change a thing. And this isn't unique to Oracle, you can say this about any company, though it is much more prevalent.

I don't mean to hurt everyone but if you did not rise in life then that doesn't mean someone else who rose was only good at one thing - sucking up. He could be just one lucky id--t or an average talent.

Many got credit for the work of others
That’s not lucky. That’s stealing.

You insult those who have been laid off. You imply that we did not work hard, and thus deserved our fate. You will soon find that there is no process, no algorithm that you can employ simply because Oracle uses no rational and consistent yardstick to measure who is next.

Perhaps they simple select people who post here? Congratulations on your thread.

Well sucking up doesn't always help. Plus not everyone is interested to be sucked up by Tom, Di-k & Harry. If someone can't be sensible about layoffs then probably that's the reason they were RIF'd. Others RIF'd just because they were on the wrong boat - by chance.
Moving internally to profitable Business Units will help.
Moving to newer technologies might help if you could deliver in time.
RIF isn't random and it happens at all organizations and at all levels. The reason no-one notices the RIF at senior level is because the modus operandi is different.

  • Suck up to your VP
  • Report to Larry directly
  • Be in the Cerner division
  • Make sure your job makes money for the company, especially if you work for JM
