Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

I wanted to be laid off

I wish I had been laid off in one of the recent rounds. I'm not in the camp of those who can't wait to leave - unlike them I need this job. But being laid off up until this point still gives people a fighting chance in finding a new job relatively quickly. Whoever gets laid off in the future will be in ten times harder position in that regard. And that's what makes me panic at the thought of future layoffs and makes me wish I was already out.

Yeah I'm trying to enjoy having a paycheck while our products aren't selling and slowly dying, knowing I could be laid off any week within the next few months. Overachieving where I can, but it's hard when leadership has no strategy and revenue isn't coming in.

Finding it really tough to enjoy life outside of work, when you base so much of your happiness on success within your career... and I just can't seem to change this mindset.

Part of me wishes they could just get it over with so I can crash, burn, leave tech and hide out in my sisters attic for the next 18 months while I figure out what to do with the rest of my life. Oracle has been the nail in the coffin to my two decade career in tech. I never made it far enough to be anything more than an overpaid IC, and now I'm a has-been in this industry, only career trajectory seems to be downhill and talking myself into it every morning. Might be time to start over.

TBH, I get pretty jealous when I see those postman riding around in those little Jeeps, out all day in the sunshine just kicking it in a t shirt and shorts. I know the pay is half of what I make, but man, that seems like the life.

Just because I'm hoping for the package it doesn't mean I'm not taking responsibility for my career.

The level of rationalization puts you squarely in the realm of the Oracle Doormat Principal. Either you are a long-time Oracle droid, in which case you have had plenty of time to see the writing on the wall, or you are more of a more recent hire who should have not taken a job an an obviously-struggling company in the first place.

Neither of the above possibilities would apply to anyone who is taking responsibility for their career.

Feel free to keep your griping to yourself too. I haven’t once complained about having a job. I’ve only said that I would prefer being laid off to quitting. It doesn’t mean I envy those who were let go. Everyone’s circumstances are different.

Yeah, keep your griping to yourself. I’m sure there are many who got the axe over the last several months who would love to have your job right now rather than struggling to make ends meet, submitting d-mb weekly job search updates to maintain the puny Unemployment benefits, and deal with the constant submitting of job applications yet hearing nothing back. You have a job, stop complaining!

"It might be a good idea to be grateful that you have a job."

It might be a good idea for Oracle to be grateful that it has employees.

You need your job, but they're not hiring you out of the goodness of their heart, they're doing it because they need you too.

"Sorry, but I'm SO sick of people saying this. IMO it's a copout and a way of justifying inaction in taking responsibility in one's career. Yeah, yeah, you'll come back with "but I wanted the package, blah, blah, blah".

You're not sorry though are you. You're labelling everyone who wanted to be laid off as copouts without knowing their individual circumstances. Honestly I'm sick of people thinking they know what's best for me and judging my decisions without any background knowledge. Just because I'm hoping for the package it doesn't mean I'm not taking responsibility for my career.

I do more to improve my own circumstances than most people I've met at Oracle. I've analyzed this in my head a million times and I know I'm doing the right thing by holding on a little longer. I'm not waiting, I'm actively working on my career. I can't stay here forever but I also can't just quit. So I have an exit plan that I will have to see through. Yes, I would like to be laid off, because it would speed up the entire process and make my life a lot easier. And I'm not sorry to say it.

There is a 5 in 292.2 million chance that I will be a billionaire tomorrow. I won't be worried about anything if that comes through for me.

Sounds like OP suffers from the Oracle Doormat Principle.

This is NOT a good time to get RIFd. With end-of-year hiring freezes with holidays coming, and with lots of competition for jobs with so many recent layoffs in IT, you could easily be out of a job for many months. Do you really want that? Might want to do everything you you can do keep your current job, and it might be a good idea to be grateful that you have a job.
