The manager's role in the decision of who gets cut

Some say that the managers have no role in making the decision of who gets cut and who doesn't, while others say that they have a significant role. Any thoughts?

I'm no longer at the company but i can speak from my experience as a manager that I had no say. Senior management made the call, line level managers were just messengers.

My manager cowered in the face of upper mgt. Threw me under the bus when it was served her well.

The last several months, I could tell I was being set up as the sacrificial lamb. The emails that had the ring of being BCC'd to upper management.

The crappiest thing that happened to me there was, on my last day, I was threatened with having my severance and paid-medical/dental severed because I dared to grab a personal document off my laptop desktop. They could all go to He-l for that....I was dealing with my wife's surgery on my last day, and to have them pile on was just too much. Thankfully, I had a sympathetic ear from HR.

I know my manager had no say in mine and was devastated.

It sounds like it's a bit of both. Directors are told to cut X amount of dollars from their salary pools. Some of the cuts come directly from the c-suite (probably remote people) and the directors have to fill in the rest of the blanks. Whether they involve the middle/direct managers probably varies from group to group.

I don’t think it’s random… 2 years ago after the merger, our team’s weakest link got cut

Depends on the BU and sometimes the SVP or VP or Director. Some would involve managers some would just make the decision higher. The simple answer is they might have input or they might not.

Manager and I had little input director said here’s the list any changes? Get rid of them. Everyone this round is a stellar performer. We have cut that deep

Former manager. Every year we had to do forced rankings. Rank from top to bottom, even if people have same yearly rating we still had to do a full list. Even identify key, critical personnel and create succession plans if certain people left who would be next in line to take their spot.

Fiserv pre-planning layoffs…We didn’t directly choose who was cut loose, but definitely provided a template on the culling order. We knew full well what it was.

When I was manager there they had us rank and submit names to the directors and then if we didn't submit enough they would ask us to do it again. Same with yearly evaluation. No one is highest and only % can be in each category. Even with cuts we were forced to have someone below meets expectations.

So to say managers have no say...yeah they did there just wasn't anything they could do about it unless pick someone else

As a manager I can say I have not heard a word and have no say. Just as concerned as the rest of you. Also concerned for my amazing team.
