In this company at least, I still have not met such a manager. I hope the rest of you were luckier in this regard? I have only met those who have no leadership skills and mostly lack competence.

Managers, directors, even VPs have limited input on these events. Numbers come in top down as absolutes. SVPs most in the know, but even they don't control it. Most directors and managers get short notice on specific impacts but get to deliver the messages.
I had a really good manager for about the first 2 1/2 years. Very understanding, would go to bat for me, and seemed to listen when I had a problem. He wasn't the most technical, but that wasn't a problem.
He moved on to another group. One with less hassles. His replacement was a yes-man, project manager who knew absolutely nothing about my role. Yet, she started dinging me on my perf. reviews, even though my P.R's were pretty good before her.
When I got the RIF, she refused to give me a reference, citing Fiserv's admonition to managers to NOT give employee references. Guess what? My previous manager had no qualms about giving me a reference.
So there are/were good managers @ Fiserv. And some boot-li---r/worthless ones.
Is that because they all made you do actual work, instead of hiking your hand through everything?
You sound a bit entitled

Frank, Why are you on this site? You aren’t fooling anyone.
I had the best manager of my career at Fiserv. However he could only do so much as his hands were tied by executive leaders.
I had my share of really really good leaders in my division from president, SVP, vp, etc. but also had my share of some really bad leaders, but after two years of not delivering, they knew their BS is about to be discovered , so they jumped to another company.
Had good ones until the merger. Now they’re Indian.

Spent 14 years in IT there. I had 2 good managers and 3 horrible ones and a couple of horrible directors.
