I've given up on O doing the right thing. However, I can't help but wonder why more money isn't invested in product development?

As someone else has so eloquently put it: I guess it just sux2bu@oracle.com!!
Microsoft and Oracle?
They're not just buying product, they're buying customers who they can then upsell their other products to and force them onto the Oracle db. Oh and use it as an excuse to do a mass layoff. Pretty common in corporate America tbh.
In tech, its all 'as is' so you can leave the company tomorrow and they can do the same to you. It's kinda brutal but its important to keep up with your skills is all I can say as, unlike a lot of other industries, there's usually always a demand for the right skills.
Off the top of my head, after spending 30 years in tech:
When you have the $ and industry heft, it’s just easier to buy stuff instead of make it.
It’s part of the corporate culture.
After the Microsoft anti-trust circus in the late 90’s, US anti trust regulators gave up. No scrutiny. Hey, buy out your largest rival, upending the market, they won’t do a thing about it.
