I'm assuming that the survivors will be overwhelmed with work now more than ever?

The survivors should all be looking for new jobs since the merit fund was a negative five percent (-5%) in real terms this past March. New rules--no defined benefit means people switch jobs more often to keep their pay up.

  2. Employer pays just enough for the employee not to quit.

We're part of a group that feels that pressure, and my now manager, a former teammate, the best for that role, has always said you do what you can do, and let the dominos fall. You work as hard as you are able, but don't ki-l yourself. So, we do that.

Our former manager told us that we work too hard, and we don't fail enough. Because we don't fail, and continue to meet and exceed quota with a limited crew, he's not allowed to hire more people. Before he retired he said, fail more. Balance is what the company needs, not a skeleton crew.

When our company was awarded some monsterous business in the multiple billions of dollars, the higher ups were all cheering. Our former manager said that's great, but we can't service it due to lack of manpower. I told you for years he said. Now, they're hiring like no one's business, and can't find the talent in the field to service it. We are taking green, green, green individuals, and it'll take 6-12 months just to get them up to speed.

Second –

What if management isn't telling you to do anything at all? Does that mean they're taking advantage of you and you should quit? Why would you say there is not a third option of "negotiate for more money in exchange for more responsibility"? It sounds like everyone is underpaid because nobody negotiates anymore...

"Setting boundaries" is an absurd agile scrum and SAFe idea that is totally not realistic in a business environment. Call me an "old school baby-boomer" but one has two choices.

  1. do your best to comply with what management orders you to do.
  2. Quit your job.

They have the power, you don't. I hope millennials are realizing that after what happened this week. All the "touchy feelie, I must feel fulfilled in my work, etc." is not real.

As far as bigger workload is concerned (I was let go this week so its not my prob anymore), never saw Ford engineers being forced to work nights and weekends like I saw at Motorola and other software companies so I think you are ok on this.

How can you say you're expecting more workload so confidently? Are you...A) unable to say no and set proper boundaries, or B) do you still believe in the performance management process and the ability for you to get a raise through hard work? Not trying to sound rude, I'm genuinely curious...

Just until it eventually goes away completely. That is unless you have the "golden skill sets" whatever that is.
