Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

What would keep you here?

The yard I work in can’t keep the new guys around. You could give some of these guys a 50% pay raise and most I believe would still quit. I hear complaints about the difficulty of the work, weather, walking, climbing, attendance, poor moral, etc.

( Copied from +1igJqpSJ ) This! Yes, exactly that! I'm one of those people who would leave even if I got a huge raise, and I'm sure there are many more of us, because it's not all about the pay.

Getting rid of the CEO. That would keep me here.

"The company maintains that capital investments and risks are the reasons for their profits and not any contribution from labor"

That really says it all. Not even a thank you/acknowledgement for the sacrifices we make, how sh---y our lives are. And absolutely zero change towards improving our quality of life.

I been here for almost 20 years and number 1 for me is get rid of attendance policy. They should be able to have enough crews available on extra boards so that if I wanna take a day off because I'm tired or something important came up in my life I can do it without points. I know that we are also our worst enemy and every board has those fmla fawkers who ruin it for everyone else. But that problem arose from this attendance policy and those people found out a way to get around it .sure it screws others but this railroad is all about tale care of number one from the very top lance f to the very bottom flma guy who screws up a board by laying off .all the rest of the job I can handle .just don't force me to go to work tired or if I have a family thing going on .it's that simple mr Omaha get rid of attendance and also offer a bonus for taking that train on Thanksgiving or Christmas day and you will never have trouble getting crews to step up for a train .

I did quit, because it's not the same company that it was when on hired on in the 90's. So the question of what would keep me here doesn't apply anymore. What would encourage me to go back? Well for starters, get rid of the inexperienced classroom management. Get rid of the damn rules that most if not all are complaining about. Pay your employees what they deserve, instead of what they think is fair. Bring the executives down to the ground level, and have them work along side the folks who are actually doing work. Lower the executives pay to a reasonable level. If they want higher pay, then they have to do their job if they want a raise just like we do. Pay the executives based on actual job performance. Get rid of the current CEO. If changes don't get made at the executive level, it's never going to get better. It's a sad idea, but I've seen nothing positive from the UP since the current CEO took charge. I know none of it will get done so my answer of coming back would be nothing. There's no way I would come back

As much as I dislike seeing guys quit I get it. I’ve been railroading over 2 decades and when I was new there was actually hope of eventually moving into a better and easier job that paid better than the yard. The yard I work in has guys with over 8 years that still can’t hold a better job on the road and are still working bad rest days with low pay for RR standards. These guys are getting frustrated because they are constantly harassed and never praised for the hard work they perform. When guys quit it makes it hard on everyone because when we’re short handed everyone has to work harder. I don’t understand how a company with so much wealth wouldn’t change with the times and pay shift differentials and bonuses for working afternoons, nights and weekends. IMO.
