Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Most managers are holding back talent

I have worked in several companies in the industry, and it is not that this does not happen in other companies, but here it is quite obvious that managers are holding back talent and deliberately preventing them from fulfilling their potential.

I don't know what the problem is, maybe they are afraid of employees who are more competent than they are. How many times have you heard of a case where someone was almost invisible here but made huge strides in their career once they moved to a different company? I know of many such cases.

It's the culture. It starts at the top. It's the "there can be only one" mentality.

Yes, agree. It's common at Oracle.

The managers will eventually hire back more people than that were laid off. This layoff is just a smokescreen to probably just manage some bad results in short term.

That is the reason I left after 10 years. I was fortunate to have two very good managers and then, was put under someone who considered anyone with a little talent and subject matter expertise to be a threat. I don’t necessarily have a high opinion of myself, but I am well educated and hold many industry certifications. The horrid, insecure woman I was put under hated the fact I was competent and tried to undermine me all the time. She resorted to insults too, e.g “people with certifications are a..holes”. That’s the type of senior directors you have at Oracle. I joined a well known competitor that is known for their CRM product … and it’s a far more professional environment

Amen.

I have seen it too!
Someone I know won awards 6 months after joining a new company, whereas they were held back from promotion for 3 years at Oracle
