Oracle on resume

Someone's comment that Oracle looks good on a resume made me laugh. I wonder if that was a sarcastic comment or if someone actually thinks that Oracle still looks good on a resume?

Oracle can be looked down upon by some people at new(ish) competitors like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and more-so recent IPO tech cos and startups who can have younger teams who don't value people from "big corporates". Emphasis on some, not all.

In the tech world, Oracle admittedly is an old company with a so-so reputation. But it's definitely got more name recognition than most, which helps. Just depends on who you talk to. Generally tier 2/3 SaaS companies will gladly take a look at you. They might pay more too, depending on how long you've been at Oracle (that's a well worn refrain from many other threads). Tier 1 if you know someone and if you can take a step down.

If it's anything, my friend with 6+ years at Google couldn't get a bite on her resume for over a year. Was a Mom who needed a break post-pandemic. She's great too. But recruiters held that break against her. So she could only take an individual contributor role and a paycut at a recent IPO. Down but up, I guess?

It's not the name, talent or pedigree.. it's who you know, the number of networking and applications you make, and how you sell yourself. And who you're talking to when it matters.

I wrote that comment. Yes, it does look good in resume, at least for my field and role. I got over 20 years of experience in engineering and my current job in Oracle by far is the most interesting and challenging and is a stand out in resume.
Oracle is large, meaning there are dead areas, but there are hot areas as well, which are in a very hot demand in the market. I am in the hot one, that's why I made that comment.
On the other hand, not everyone got a history of employment by Google, Apple, IBM, etc, and Oracle is a very well recognized name.

Oracle on your resume can be fantastic if you play your cards right. The odds that the person doing the interview probably is ex Oracle. You can use that to build rapport and connect to the new culture.

It can look good, but consider this; if an organization believes that it is a good thing, is that really a company you want to work for? If they are that out of date, or misinformed, perhaps you should pass!

Move along!

Re: Oracle Experience = 💩

Only WAY bigger and WAY stinkier than that!

You really want to know what it looks like to a prospective employer?

Oracle Experience = 💩

Oracle absolutely looks good on a resume. Don't be stupid just because the company makes you mad. Tons of Oracle employees go to competitors all the time (competitors that are perceived as making superior products)... the reason this happens is because they know training at Oracle is top notch. Oracle competitors let Oracle train the employees, then the competitors poach them. It's a smart model, and as I mentioned, it happens all the time... look at Salesforce Workday, etc.
