Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Anyone ever challenge their ranking?

Definitely not in the worst position ever but wondering if anyone has ever challenged their rank group or if it’s even possible? I (along with many others) was represented by a wet noodle of a boss this year who was not able to describe to me why I was so low given all of the step out opportunities I took. I understand it’s mostly a contest on whose boss has bigger ba--s and popularity, not performance.

I have seen whole topics disappear.

I am curious if EM tries to track people that post.

Maybe track on the free campus WiFi?

Nothing to do with Supervisor b@ll size.

The list is manipulated prior to the ranking meeting. Supervisors is n the meeting cannot move you up mare than maybe jumping 2 people.

An executive with phone calls can move you up jumping 30 people prior to the list being published for the ranking meeting.

I have seen this happen where one site’s list was completely revised in an order based on race and s-x and the Supervisor was told to submit the list in the revised order or face consequences in his own ranking. The people in the ranking meeting had no idea about the manipulation and assumed the list was legitimate. Very rarely are the lists legitimately based on performance.

@2obg+1ibk5gHM I knew someone who did try to challenge. The next year they dropped down to NSI and didn’t pass the PIP. You should either accept the system or quit and move on. You aren’t going to change anything unless you become CEO.

You are kidding yourself if you think your supervisors ball size has anything to do with it. You really think one supervisor can take down thirty other supervisors in the session? Each supervisor can get a couple of people ranked high and no more. If one supervisor tries to pull that shot of ranking their entire team high the other supervisors quickly reach them a lesson and rank their entire team. I’ve seen it happen multiple times. Usually a first time supervisor who thinks they are a hot shot. They quickly learn how to play nice as if they don’t the mob attacks. Basically every supervisor has to meet the distribution with their team.

OP, I think you should challenge it. Set up a meeting with your supervisor's supervisor and your local HR contact and make your case! Show your ability to persuade and influence early in this cycle.

HR is every company is there to represent the company’s interests and not the employees’ interests. Expecting that HR will take an employees’ side against the company’s side is a fool’s hope. HR won’t take an employee’s side against management unless management is threatening the company’s interest. Even then, the odds aren’t good.

Yes. It was in RTD. Worst of the worst administrators (leaders) there. Promptly left the company after realizing it was a rigged game. Happier than ever.

Ranking is the only Process in EM that has immunity from audit.

The only audits on ranking are the ones that ensure minorities and females are adequately represented at the top.

Most of the political manipulation is done by phone calls prior to the ranking sessions. No traceability.

EM would be a very different company if the highest performers were placed at top of list and sponsored persons were placed where they actually deserved.

There are published rules about ranking. These rules are only followed as far as it is convenient to follow them.

HiPo sponsored sh!theads will be placed far higher than they ever could possibly deserve. Genius high contributing experts lose points as they age, even if have $100 million impact annually.

Chosen managers are protected from dropping even if they make blatantly horrible decisions costing EM million$.

System totally manipulated. Audit of system for fairness and consistency forbidden. Only audits are to make sure enough minorities are at the top and they are wrongly moved upward as required.

They can rank us wherever they want, for any reason they want and without any recourse, yeah that’s winning right.
Guys this process is ONLY intended to reward HiPo’s and weed everyone else out. Had a outstanding individual year, ok you failed at collaboration. Had a excellent collaboration year, you failed as an individual. Work hard, show up everyday , ok your not visible to other groups.
It’s all a game, it’s unethical at best and I cannot wait to exit XOM..

I did.

I went to the HR Manager filed an official complaint because my department manager told me I was best performer but I ranked somewhat lower because there were so many “chosen” people in my rank group who had to be given appropriate ranking to match their HiPo CL curve profiles.

HR immediately went to my groups senior executive.

That Senior executive called and instructed my supervisor to tell me to withdraw my complaint to HR and begin damage control to salvage my career.

I wrote an email to the senior HR Manager and told him “I have been instructed by Senior Management via my supervisor to inform you that I am dropping my complaint. This is my official notification to you that I am complying with that instruction and dropping my complaint.” The senior HR Manager wrote back and just said “I confirm receipt of your email dropping your complaint”.

In summary, rankings cannot be challenged successfully. Even if proof and witnesses that the rules were broken to place lesser performers above you.

I would recommend against official complaint. Never ever believe that HR will treat you in strict confidence. HR is there for EM management and not there for EM employees.

The typical process for this is to update your resume and send it to other companies.
